Card 1 of 108
Front. Abashed. Mud from the lambing barn streaked the iron scraper outside Pendleton Veterinary, and Mateo stood abashed over it, face turned from Doctor Okonkwo because the lamb latch had been his to shut. A wet nose worked the gap behind him. Why will he not meet her eyes?

All 108 cards in this deck
1.Abashed
Mud from the lambing barn streaked the iron scraper outside Pendleton Veterinary, and Mateo stood abashed over it, face turned from Doctor Okonkwo because the lamb latch had been his to shut. A wet nose worked the gap behind him. Why will he not meet her eyes?
Shame holds him. He is embarrassed that the open latch was his mistake, and looking at the veterinarian feels impossible.
2.Acerbic
A bargain cable slapped the oak floor of the recording booth, and the hiss that followed drew an acerbic line from Lila: the fault sat in that cable and nowhere else. Where does her answer leave the engineer?
Exposed, with no softening. The words are sour and cutting, meant to sting rather than to rescue the take.
3.Acquiescent
Omar disliked the new channel marker's paint, said so once, and watched the river pilot tap the post. The initial he then put on the damp log was acquiescent. Once that mark is down, his protest has become what?
A quiet giving-in. He accepts the marker and lets the objection die instead of pressing it any further.
4.Adamant
Wind knocked the Bromley chairlift shack while Priya kept both palms on the red grip tag. Her adamant rule was simple: car 12 stays empty until the bolt is replaced. Will she let riders board on the bad bolt?
Persuasion has no purchase on her. The empty car waits until that bolt is replaced.
5.Aghast
In the prop shop Helen lifted the festival mask and stopped aghast: a crack ran through the left eye, and plaster dust salted the velvet tray. Which reaction arrives with that dust?
Horror-struck shock. The ruined face of the mask hits her before she can think what to do next.
6.Aloof
Volunteers hauled a drill line over the black rocks. From the lighthouse gallery Kenji watched, aloof, wool gloves unused in his coat. What distance is he keeping from their haul?
A cool remove. He stays present and apart, unwilling to join either the labor or the feeling of it.
7.Ambivalent
Under the quad elm, Ruth held a bent transfer folder in one hand and a dorm key in the other through the passing of two buses. Her ambivalent silence outlasted both engines. Between folder and key, what stays unsettled?
Feelings that contradict each other. Leaving and staying both tug at her, and neither one has won.
8.Apathetic
The scoreboard bulb clicked from 2 to 3. Felix looked apathetic over a stained program and let the cheer break around his shoulders. Does the new number stir him?
Interest and concern are both missing, so the game can change without reaching him at all.
9.Apprehensive
Minutes before the foghorn test, Amina stood on the breakwater and counted rivets on the switch cover with apprehensive fingers. Ahead of the blast, that counting is a sign of what?
Uneasy fear of what is coming. She expects the horn to be hard to bear and cannot put the worry down.
10.Ardent
Hot brakes smelled through the transit garage past midnight, where Tomas gave an ardent reading of the night-crew petition beside a bus that would not be assigned until dawn. What devotion is that midnight reading showing?
A burning commitment. He cares about the crew with passion, not with polite, passing interest.
11.Arrogant
Victor slid the younger pilot's chart back across the ready-room table with two fingers. The correction he inked, arrogant and unasked, ignored whoever had flown the leg. Where does he place his judgment against the pilot who flew the leg?
Above hers. He treats his own skill as so obvious that asking would waste his time.
12.Averse
Rain needled the botanical garden, and the culvert grate offered Nadia a ten-minute savings. She remained averse to the dark pipe and stayed in the weather. Could that shortcut become something she accepts?
She has a strong dislike of it. The long wet walk is preferable to stepping into the pipe.
13.Bellicose
Calvin climbed the marina ramp talking war about a slip fee, lease folder crushed in one fist. He was already bellicose when the dock manager opened the door. What intention comes up the ramp with him?
He arrives ready for a fight. The slip fee is a battle he means to win.
14.Belligerent
June hit the turnstile arm in the stadium tunnel and insisted, louder at each shove, that her pass had already scanned. The metal got a belligerent shoulder. How is she meeting that arm?
As an opponent. Hostility and a readiness to quarrel drive the shove, not a request for a second scan.
15.Benevolent
The intern came up a token short at the cable-car booth. Arthur's payment was quiet and benevolent: quarters until the fare light turned green, and no speech to go with them. What moves those quarters?
Kindness. He wants the intern carried up the hill and feels no need to advertise the help.
16.Blase
A green tail crossed the dish above the radio telescope. After a year of ridge night shifts, Yara made a blase log entry for the comet, the same hand she used for aircraft lights. Familiarity with wonders has left her what?
Wearied and unimpressed. Sights that would stagger a visitor have become ordinary paperwork to her.
17.Cantankerous
The first tram out of the carbarn had a squeaking bench and a new knot on the bell rope. Walter snapped at both before the second stop, cantankerous in an otherwise empty car. What temper is sharing that bench?
A quarrelsome bad temper. Small defects are enough to put him in a fight with the morning.
18.Cavalier
Opening night was Thursday, and the cloud costume was ripped along one seam. Brooke seemed cavalier under the loft's bad bulb, pinning the muslin with a paper clip. What degree of care does the tear receive?
Almost none. She is offhand about damage that calls for real attention.
19.Censorious
Hugh walked the mosaic scaffold naming every crooked tessera, red pencil tapping, voice censorious enough to reach the apprentices on the floor. That running comment delivers what judgment?
A severe one. He is disposed to criticize harshly, and he wants the criticism heard.
20.Chagrined
The kiln lid stuck, then popped, and the glaze test cracked on the community-studio shelf while Paolo's visiting teacher still wore her coat. A chagrined stare settled on the shard in his palm. Caught in that moment, he feels what?
Mortified annoyance. Embarrassment and distress arrive together because the failure has a witness.
21.Choleric
Noon jammed the drawbridge gear. Roy flung his cap at the housing and shouted the length of the canal, choleric within a breath of the jam. What breaks loose in him?
A hot temper, immediately. Irritation does not simmer in him; it flashes into anger.
22.Circumspect
Someone had written a rumor about the coxswain across the rowing-club whiteboard. Sasha read it, erased nothing, and remained circumspect until a text from the coxswain arrived. Before that text, what limit does she keep?
Gossip gets neither her hand nor her mouth. Caution makes her weigh the consequences before she speaks or wipes the board.
23.Complacent
The cider-press gauge had drifted a needle's width. Luis kept his boots on the rail, complacent that last autumn's orchard setting would serve this crop. What risky comfort is he taking from the old number?
Smug satisfaction. He is too content with the familiar setting to suspect it might now be wrong.
24.Conciliatory
Chalk still whitened Imani's wrist from the spat on the climbing wall. She held out the spare glove, a conciliatory offer, and waited without adding another accusation. Offered with no fresh accusation attached, the spare glove is meant to accomplish which end?
Making peace. She wants the quarrel eased and some goodwill restored.
25.Condescending
Patrick explained the harbor-chart slate to the new diver in a slow voice, condescending, pausing after each arrow as if it were a lesson for a child. Patrick's slowed arrows place him where, relative to the new diver?
A superior one. He talks down to her and performs a rank she never granted him.
26.Contrite
Elise returned contrite to the sculpture yard, the ruined plaster cast wrapped in a towel, and set the broken nose on the instructor's bench before she trusted her voice. What comes in with the towel?
Remorse for a wrong she owns. She is seriously sorry and ready to face the person she let down.
27.Contemptuous
In the shipyard rigging loft, Marco thumbed a sloppy splice, produced a contemptuous sniff, and pushed the whole coil aside. What worth does that sniff assign the work?
The splice gets no respect from him. Contempt makes the coil seem unworthy of a serious rigger.
28.Covetous
Farah's plot behind the greenhouse held three plain shrubs. Over the fence, copper tags glinted on the neighbor's roses, and she grew covetous in the changing light. What wanting fixes her on those tags?
A desire for what is not hers. Envy keeps her on the labeled roses across the fence.
29.Cynical
A campaign spot on the subway-platform television promised cleaner trains. Dean met it with a cynical smile that never reached his eyes. Cleaner trains, promised on that screen, meet which habit of mind in Dean?
With distrust of the speaker's motive. He assumes the pledge serves the campaign rather than the riders.
30.Deferential
At the stone yard Hana waited on the elder mason and only then released the trowel, both hands still deferential. What regard do the hands and the wait communicate?
Respect that yields. She honors the mason's skill and seniority ahead of her own turn.
31.Defiant
The canyon guide called him down off the seep. Leo stayed on the wet rock with his chin up and one shoe planted, defiant. What answer is that shoe giving?
A bold refusal. He resists the order in the open instead of climbing down.
32.Derisive
Chris's balsa bridge folded in the engineering lab. His derisive laugh arrived with a flicked spar that skittered across the floor. Laugh and flicked spar together treat the collapse how?
Ridiculing it. He mocks the collapse instead of simply noting that the bridge broke.
33.Despondent
Take three died on the soundstage. Naomi sat despondent on a coil of cable, the slate still chalked with scene 14. What has happened to her hope?
It has sunk into hopelessness. The repeated failure leaves her unable to picture a take that works.
34.Detached
A family on the next ferry bench argued over a paper map. Malik's detached count of channel buoys took in none of their sides. How much of their anger does he take on?
None of it. He watches as an outsider and keeps their feelings from becoming his.
35.Diffident
Priyanka had a fair question about the cracked eyepiece. Even so she hovered at the observatory door, diffident, knuckles short of the wood. What keeps the knock from landing?
A shy lack of confidence. She doubts that her question is worth anyone's trouble inside.
36.Disdainful
Wind clicked the plastic wreath against the memorial gate. Clara lifted a disdainful chin at the bright leaves. In her view, that tribute sits where?
Beneath the place and beneath her standards. She scorns the wreath as unworthy of the gate.
37.Dispassionate
Two thermometers in the weather-station shed disagreed by a degree. Jo copied both numbers and stayed dispassionate about the sensor she had installed herself. Why do both readings remain on the page?
Because she will not let preference choose. Her judgment stays calm and fair rather than defending her own instrument.
38.Disparaging
On the aquarium's night tour, Elliot told the headphone mike that the seahorse tank was a night-light with fins. Water below him stayed still, and the remark came out disparaging. What does the remark do to the exhibit?
It belittles the tank. He invites the group to treat the exhibit as something of little worth.
39.Dogmatic
An intern asked whether the dome diagram allowed another reading of the orbit. Serge shut the planetarium script and answered in a dogmatic clip. How much room remains for that other reading?
Doubt is shut out of the booth. He treats his own statement as fact.
40.Doting
Every few minutes the smallest lamb kicked a striped blanket loose. Gus returned to his knees in the shed, doting, and tucked the wool under the hoof again. Each kicked hoof brings Gus back to his knees for which reason of the heart?
Excessive fondness. Loving attention will not let him leave the corner untucked.
41.Ebullient
Fog beaded Rosa's jacket at the summit cairn. She sent the peak's name down the empty switchback in an ebullient whoop. What overflows down that path?
High spirits that will not stay contained. Cheer and energy spill out of her louder than the fog.
42.Effusive
Andre met the retired conductor at the stage door, took the old cap in both hands, and released a stream of effusive praise for an overture from 1998. How tightly is that greeting held in?
It is hardly held in at all. Admiration gushes out instead of arriving as a brief hello.
43.Embittered
Sandra stopped at the reunion lanyard table and recited the solo the committee had reassigned twenty years earlier, her embittered voice catching on the old title. The old assignment is evidence of what lasting condition?
Resentment that has hardened. The slight remains bitter, not a story she can tell lightly.
44.Enamored
Orange glass swelled on the pipe inside the furnace room. Theo was enamored of the gather, and the timer in his pocket buzzed unheard. What has the glowing bulb done to his attention?
Captured it completely. Fascination holds him the way strong admiration does, and the clock loses.
45.Equanimous
The lock clock added an hour for the barge ahead. Captain Shah's equanimous hand set the radio down and left the wait uncursed. What balance shows in that unhurried hand?
Evenness of mind. The delay is real stress, and Shah's temper stays level anyway.
46.Exasperated
On the cliff path the shutter jammed a fourth time. Diego, exasperated, pressed his forehead to the cold camera body while wind worried the strap. Where has repeated failure put his patience?
At its end. Irritation has piled up until the camera is almost intolerable.
47.Fatalistic
Compass glass starred against a portage rock. Ellis pocketed the instrument with a fatalistic shrug and said the river would set them down where it meant to. What belief makes the pocketing easy?
A belief that the outcome is already fixed. He submits to events instead of treating the crack as a problem to solve.
48.Fervent
At the trailhead kiosk, Leila's pen nearly scored the clipboard. She signed the habitat petition with fervent pressure and did not look up until the line was deep. What intensity is grooved into that signature?
Passionate intensity. Her support is hot and wholehearted, not a casual name on a list.
49.Flippant
During the pier briefing Nate saluted the safety card and compared the current to a carousel. The flippant joke landed in a borrowed wetsuit. A carousel joke in that wetsuit handles the safety card with which manner?
Without the seriousness it asks for. He is lightly dismissive of a danger the briefing wants handled with care.
50.Fractious
One window seat remained when the platform clock hit the minute. The Kovacs twins turned fractious over it, and a suitcase wheel spun under a kick. One window seat is enough to put the twins into which temper?
An irritable, quarrelsome one. A small scarcity is enough to set them against each other.
51.Impassive
Behind the surgery glass the monitor skipped a beat. No flicker of eye or brow crossed Doctor Feldman's impassive face above the mask. What emotion does her face release?
None that anyone can read. Whatever the skip stirs stays off her features.
52.Implacable
Survey string grazed Adele Pell's roses. She stood by the new fence post, implacable, and told Alvarez the post would not move. Can an apology soften her?
Her hostility cannot be appeased. The post stays where she planted it, apology or none.
53.Incredulous
A sticker on the used-bike stall claimed four hundred miles. Renee touched the hooked, worn chain and went incredulous, thumb still on the odometer. Does she credit the number?
She cannot. The ruined chain makes so few miles impossible to believe.
54.Indignant
Sonia's underpass mural had become a flat gray. The clean roller shook in her hand, an indignant tremor that treated the overnight paint as an insult. The gray strikes her as what?
An injustice worth anger. She feels wronged, not merely disappointed by a change of color.
55.Inimical
Anton pinned the new hours to the foundry board. He seemed inimical toward the paper, as though the schedule had walked in to do him harm. In that look, the hours resemble what?
An enemy. His feeling toward them is hostile, past neutral acceptance and past ordinary annoyance.
56.Insolent
Reed kept his cap on in the academy hallway and offered the inspector a bow deep enough to mock. The insolent angle was the whole message. Cap still on, bow too deep: Reed's courtesy withholds which thing?
Real respect. The bow is boldly rude, performed so the mockery shows.
57.Intransigent
Three hours in a warehouse office left a notepad of lease compromises unsigned. Dalca pinned one finger to a single number and proved intransigent against every middle figure. How far will he travel toward a middle figure?
He refuses every compromise. The blank lines are that refusal sitting in front of the mediator.
58.Irascible
A late whistle jerked Stationmaster Ibarra's cap. Regulars stepped back from the yellow line, already familiar with his irascible temper. The whistle is enough to ignite what?
Anger, and quickly. He is easily provoked, which is why the platform has learned the signs.
59.Irreverent
Other visitors at the bell museum kept their hands behind them. Tara leaned on the velvet rope and tapped the plaque's bronze corner, irreverent, just to hear it ping. Hands behind backs all around her, Tara's ping says she regards the plaque how?
A lack of the respect the room expects. She treats a solemn object as something to play.
60.Jaded
Rosin whitened Simon's wrist during the fifth encore. He grew jaded as the ovation passed with no more stir than lobby noise. Repetition has left his pleasure in what condition?
Worn out. Too many encores have dulled a response that a first bow would have lit.
61.Jaundiced
Camille read the harbor figures in the news van and marked three cheerful totals with a jaundiced eye. She was sure the page had been dressed. Those numbers pass through what kind of view?
A prejudiced, sour one. She expects spin and will not grant the release a clean reading.
62.Jubilant
Jules struck the finish buoy and called the boat's name across the cold river. The coxswain's jubilant shout carried farther than the splash. Across that cold river, the shout after the buoy travels as which kind of cry?
Triumphant joy. Winning fills him with a celebration he wants the whole river to hear.
63.Lugubrious
Each bare perch in the empty aviary received a pause. Owen's lugubrious voice dragged from one hook to the next, heavy enough for a funeral. What tone is he pouring over the room?
Exaggerated gloom. The mournfulness is theatrical, far heavier than a simple inventory of missing birds.
64.Magnanimous
Martin had won both the park-chess game and the club raffle on the same bench. He slid the ticket to the rival who had blundered a knight, magnanimous about the loss and the prize. What generosity is in that slide?
A large-hearted generosity. He can give a prize to the person who has just competed against him.
65.Malevolent
Under the alley exit light, the rival photographer's pass was gone from the desk Vince controlled. His malevolent smile took its time. What wish hides in the helpful story he is about to tell?
Harm is the point of the missing pass. He enjoys the photographer's trouble and is in no hurry to repair it.
66.Maudlin
String lights dimmed at the end of the dance in the rented hall. Pete grew maudlin over a scuffed rental shoe and a song from his first year on the job. What excess finds him in that dimness?
Tearful sentimentality. A small memory receives more emotion than the moment can hold.
67.Melancholy
Shut stalls lined one side of the winter boardwalk, gray water the other. Ingrid's melancholy walk kept one glove on the cold rail for the length of the pier. What sadness keeps her there?
A deep, thoughtful sadness. It lingers quietly rather than breaking into a sudden fit of tears.
68.Mercurial
Lev praised the lantern cue, then condemned it before the prop-table stopwatch had counted three minutes. The mercurial swing needed no intermission. How fast is that temper moving?
Fast enough to reverse inside a few minutes. Warm approval and sharp blame trade places with almost no gap.
69.Morose
The mine-tour car cleared the timbering, and the operator asked about the frozen latch. Jonah answered with a grunt, hood up, morose in the shaking seat. What gloom is riding with him?
A sullen, ill-tempered gloom. He is sour and withdrawn, not peacefully quiet.
70.Nonchalant
Wren opened the transfer email on the baggage-claim bench and spun her luggage tag around one finger. The nonchalant spin continued while the belt hiccuped. How stirred does the news leave her looking?
Casually unconcerned. She wears a cool calm and declines to show that the move matters.
71.Nonplussed
The trail post that should have carried a blaze was blank. Grant held a shaking map, nonplussed, while both printed arrows insisted on spruce trees that all looked alike. The missing mark leaves him how?
Bewildered, and unsure how to act. Surprise and confusion arrive together, and neither arrow tells him which way to step.
72.Obdurate
The harbormaster offered fresh paint and a new name for the scraped bow. Lottie kept a palm on the old letters. Her obdurate refusal ended the conversation. Fresh paint meets what hardness?
A stubbornness that will not soften. Persuasion strikes a mind already hardened against any change of name.
73.Obsequious
At the sculpture opening Freddy took a donor's coat that had not been offered. He grew obsequious over a remark that had not been a joke, laughing anyway. A remark that was not a joke still draws Freddy's laugh for the sake of which gain?
Favor, through servility. He fawns and flatters instead of behaving like an ordinary host.
74.Peevish
A sock stuck to the drum when the dryer on Pine paused. Carl scolded the machine, peevish, and told the glass door it had done it on purpose. A stalled sock draws irritation of what scale?
A petty scale, inflated into a grievance. Trifles make him irritable enough to scold a dryer.
75.Pensive
An anemone closed over a shell in the tide pool. After the tour took the stairs, Mina kept a pensive watch at the rim. What state is the pool holding her in?
Serious reflection, shaded with sadness. She has gone inward and thoughtful, not merely fallen behind.
76.Petulant
Dawn scrubbed the balloon launch for the whole field. Seth kicked the grass basket and complained that the wind had singled him out, petulant beside pilots who were already packing. Disappointment leaves him in what temper?
A sulky, childish one. He treats the weather as a personal slight and cannot take it with grace.
77.Phlegmatic
The seismograph needle jumped and settled. Pencil cup refilled, Doctor Cho stayed as phlegmatic as the concrete floor while he noted the spike. What temperament keeps his hand that steady?
A calm one that is hard to excite. He records the event without hurry or emotional flare.
78.Placid
Mist lay on the fern benches, and Ada's watering can was already empty. She looked placid among the dripping leaves, hands loose at her sides. With the work finished, her mood is what?
Peacefully undisturbed. Nothing in the wet house ruffles the calm she is resting in.
79.Plaintive
Phones rang across the wildlife-shelter desk. Eli's question about the injured fox barely cleared the counter, a plaintive thread in the noise. Barely clearing the counter, Eli's question about the fox carries which sound?
Mournful. Sorrow shapes it, soft and grieving rather than bright or demanding.
80.Polemical
Ned's letter to the county weekly opened by attacking the overpass plan and everyone who had smiled at the model in the chandlery window. The piece was polemical from that first line. From that opening attack, the letter is aimed at which outcome?
Win a dispute. He writes to argue and to strike opponents, not to offer a neutral account.
81.Querulous
From the depot to the river bridge, the night-bus heater rattled. Nikos Pappas itemized every rattle in a querulous voice that did not pause for the tunnel. What kind of talk fills that stretch?
Habitual complaining. He finds fault in a thin, persistent way and seems unable to stop.
82.Rancorous
Anya and Paul shared a music stand and, since the audition results were posted, nothing else. Their rancorous silence made each page turn sound loud. Since those results, the air between their shoulders holds what?
Long-bitter resentment. The audition still poisons a quiet that could have stayed merely professional.
83.Recalcitrant
The foreman's second whistle ordered everyone off the wet scaffold. Robbie's boots stayed planted, a recalcitrant answer on the plank. A second whistle, and the boots still hold the plank: his answer to the order is what?
He stubbornly resists authority. He will not obey, and the planted boots are the refusal.
84.Reproachful
Dana met Colin at the boatyard gate with the bent oarlock he had promised to replace. The look she held on him was reproachful and already finished. Across the gate, the look sends what?
Blame. She is disappointed in him, and the oarlock makes the accusation without a speech.
85.Resigned
Ranger Solis had cleared the switchback at dawn. By noon a slide covered it, and the closure sign went under his arm in resigned silence. That folded sign marks an acceptance of which fact?
He has accepted an unpleasant fact he cannot change. The path will stay shut, and fighting the slide will not open it.
86.Restive
The cue light in the theater wings stayed dark. Bess and Niko shifted on their tape marks, restive, costume hems brushing the floor. What condition will not let them stand easy?
Impatient restlessness. The wait has made them edgy and difficult to keep still.
87.Reverent
Quinta took the bell-tower stairs two at a time, then stopped short of the worn rope. Both hands stayed open and empty, suddenly reverent. At the grip, her manner has become what?
Deeply respectful. Haste drops away, and she treats the bell as something to honor.
88.Rueful
Nolan turned the bent propeller on the repair bench, smiled at the nick his shortcut had left, and set a rueful thumb along the metal. His thumb on that nick accompanies a smile of which flavor?
Regret with a wry edge. He knows the damage is his fault, and the sorrow can almost laugh at itself.
89.Sanguine
Red marks covered the crossing chart on the dock locker. Dot remained sanguine while she packed, and she told the dockhand the ice would open by Thursday. What expectation goes into the bag with her gloves?
Cheerful confidence that events will turn out well. The risk is visible, and she still expects a good Thursday.
90.Sardonic
Varnish had skinned over in the jar. Otto told the jar, and nobody else, that it was a fine seal, sardonic above the scarred bench. What sort of humor is that congratulations?
Grim mockery. The praise is a dry sneer at a failure, not a real celebration.
91.Scornful
Halfway across the installation, Maren called the hanging wires a tangle. She was already scornful, one shoulder turned toward the exit. Called a tangle halfway through, the wires send her toward the exit in which spirit?
Open contempt. She rejects the work as deserving disdain rather than the rest of her time.
92.Skeptical
The outfitter swore the stove fuel would not gel in cold. Hassan tipped the can, skeptical, and trusted the thin smell more than the swear. Against the outfitter's swear, Hassan keeps back which response?
Belief. Doubt stays in place until the can itself gives him a reason to let it go.
93.Smug
After the unaccompanied solo, Celeste checked the stairwell mirror. She looked smug, bow tucked under one arm like a prize she had expected all along. What self-approval is the glass catching?
Conceited satisfaction. She is overly pleased with herself and sure the praise was owed.
94.Solicitous
At the clinic door Ben asked whether the bandage itched, whether the cab had waited, and whether the stairs would be too much. He lingered, solicitous, for every answer. What care repeats in that list?
Anxious care. He fusses because he needs to know the patient will truly be all right.
95.Somber
Wet life jackets dripped on the boathouse floor after the skiff capsized. Ida's somber stillness left the spare oar where it lay among the puddles. Dripping jackets and an untouched oar surround Ida in which gravity?
A dark, serious gloom. The near-accident leaves her grave, and the busy work of the house can wait.
96.Stoic
The jetway speaker canceled the last flight. Marisol's jaw set, stoic, and the brace on her wrist stayed hidden in a sleeve. Canceled flight, set jaw, hidden brace: Marisol declines to show which burden?
The frustration of the cancellation, and the discomfort with it. She endures the blow without letting it onto her face.
97.Sullen
Evan rode the funicular against the cliff window and gave the ticket check nothing back. Hood low, he stayed sullen for the whole rise. What closed-off temper comes up the track with him?
Sulky gloom. He is resentful and shut down, not calm and not merely shy.
98.Supercilious
Fenn, rigger in the sculpture court, ran his eye over the student crate. The supercilious lift of one eyebrow paused on the handwritten tape. What rank is that eyebrow claiming?
A higher one. He behaves as though the crate, and the student who packed it, sit beneath him.
99.Sycophantic
In the control room Gio's laugh arrived before the producer's joke had finished. He added sycophantic praise for a camera angle nobody had called. Gio's laugh lands before the punchline in pursuit of which advantage?
The producer's favor. The flattery is servile and calculated, not a response the joke earned.
100.Truculent
A flagger asked Kyle to yield the bike lane at the bridge works. His truculent shoulder squared at the cone, and he waited to be told a second time. Another request will meet what from him?
Aggressive defiance. He is ready to fight about the lane rather than move aside.
101.Unctuous
Lawrence apologized for the late hem at the tailor's three-way mirror. Between each sorry he folded in praise of the jacket, unctuous from collar to cuff. What coats that apology?
Oily insincerity. The smoothness is too thick, and too flattering, to be plain regret.
102.Vehement
From the post-office steps Grace objected to the mail-route cut. Each vehement sentence came down on the railing hard enough to ring it. With what force is she objecting?
The force of intense feeling. She is deeply opposed, and the protest comes out hot and strong.
103.Vindictive
After the debate loss, Derek studied the rival's poster in the stairwell and chose the corner whose tear would hurt most. The plan was vindictive down to the inch. What desire is the torn paper meant to serve?
Revenge. He wants the rival to pay for the loss, not the poster to be improved.
104.Vitriolic
On the neighborhood call-in show, Rhonda burned through the dredging plan until the host cut the line. By then her vitriolic monologue had used up the host's patience. The cutoff comes only after the monologue reaches which shade of attack?
A savagely bitter one. Insults corrode the argument until it is too caustic to leave on the air.
105.Wary
Rain left the quarry road shining. Noor tested slate-colored puddles one boot at a time and grew wary of stone that only looked solid. What governs those careful steps?
Caution about hidden danger. She suspects the wet surface and will not rely on how it looks.
106.Wistful
A chain held the carousel horse Sam had ridden when the pier lights still worked. He stood at the locked gate, wistful, thumb against the cold link. What longing meets him there?
A yearning for a time he cannot reopen. Sadness and desire stand together at the chain.
107.Wrathful
Captain Voss found the channel buoy cut loose, the line feathered by a knife. His wrathful voice cracked over the skiff as he named the damage. What anger fills that naming?
Fierce, full anger. He treats the cut as an outrage and does not soften a word of it.
108.Zealous
Closing time passed inside the seed vault. Pilar stayed at one tray, zealous, recounting a single packet of alpine seed rather than trust the first total. What devotion keeps her after hours?
Fervent, active devotion to the count. She will not leave the packet half-believed.
