Graduate Record Examinations Vocabulary: Argument

108 cards

Original scenes that teach words for a claim, the evidence behind it, and the pushback it draws.

Card 1 of 108

Front. A-posteriori. Frost still rimed the brass gauge on the Juneau tide-station roof when Hana wrote a-posteriori beside her conclusion that the dock piles had shifted two inches. On what observed fact is that conclusion resting?

All 108 cards in this deck

  1. 1.A-posteriori

Frost still rimed the brass gauge on the Juneau tide-station roof when Hana wrote a-posteriori beside her conclusion that the dock piles had shifted two inches. On what observed fact is that conclusion resting?

Hana's shifted-pile conclusion rests on the gauge she read after the freeze. Support that arrives only by looking, not by a rule fixed ahead of time, is what a-posteriori records.

  2. 2.A-priori

Before anyone unreeled the tape at Toroweap, Idris taped an a-priori card to the theodolite: shared bedding, he had decided, already made the north wall steeper than the south. Why publish that slope comparison while the reel is still closed?

Shared bedding is allowed to settle the slopes before anyone measures, so the taped card treats the comparison as justified apart from observation.

  3. 3.Abduction

Three pings vanished at the Cape Disappointment radio desk, and the anchor alarm stayed dark. Pilar called her choice an abduction: a dead battery, not a dragged mooring. Which account of the missing pings is that label selecting?

Pilar never opens the buoy; she selects the explanation that best fits the missing pings and the quiet alarm, and choosing that likeliest account is abduction.

  4. 4.Ad-hominem

Across the Oakland plat counter went Laila's contour sheet, shoved back by Jules, whose answer was an ad-hominem quoting the year her apprenticeship ended instead of the elevation ticks along the creek. Whose training record is he offering in answer to those ticks?

Jules spends the reply on the year Laila finished her apprenticeship and never meets the elevation ticks, substituting the person for the claim.

  5. 5.Affidavit

Two notarized pages, the witness's own sentences about the torn fender on barge 14, lay squared under the glass at the Duluth salvage desk, where Edie filed them as an affidavit. Sworn and notarized, those fender sentences are meant to serve the file how?

The witness's own notarized sentences about the torn fender can enter the file as sworn written evidence.

  6. 6.Allegation

Chalk appeared on the Erie Canal lock door before the log peg moved. Nate's allegation said the night crew had left the mitre gates half-seated, and the blank peg said nothing back. What standing does that chalk keep while the peg stays empty?

Until the log peg moves, chalk that the mitre gates were left half-seated remains a claim announced before it is proved.

  7. 7.Ambiguity

Ren clipped a flag reading ambiguity onto a Providence letterpress galley whose second line could blame either the bridge or the bond issue for the failed inspection. Which inspection failure is a reader unable to pick?

Bridge and bond issue both survive as the failed inspection, because the galley line will not choose between them.

  8. 8.Amphiboly

"The operator told the rider the brake had failed and she should walk." Cole circled that bulletin in the Portland transit booth and wrote amphiboly over the pronoun. Where is the double meaning in his circle coming from?

The pronoun can be the operator or the rider because of how the sentence is built, so the double meaning comes from structure.

  9. 9.Analogy

A lighthouse Fresnel ring sat on the Mount Wilson drawing desk so Kenji could defend his lens sketch by analogy, matching each groove on the vellum to a groove in the glass. How is that ring supposed to vouch for the unfinished sketch?

Kenji borrows a reason for the drawn grooves from the known grooves in the Fresnel ring, carrying a conclusion across by comparison.

  10. 10.Anecdotal

Sol's Hood Canal dive slate recorded one pale kelp frond and a date. The season summary left the slate off its charts and stamped the story anecdotal. Why keep one dated frond out of the season charts?

One diver's dated frond is kept off the season charts, since an isolated episode cannot speak for the whole farm.

  11. 11.Antinomy

Bess read both brass plaques in the Boston aqueduct gallery, then entered antinomy on the duty sheet: frost required the sluice open, and twenty degrees required every valve shut. What clash are those plaques creating for one frozen sluice?

Each plaque looks binding, and together they order the frozen sluice both open and shut, a clash of principles that each seem to hold.

  12. 12.Antithesis

Opposite the reel notes in the Rochester film archive, Mina hung a card titled antithesis. The notes claimed the levee held; her card said the sandbags in frame 400 had already split. Relative to the reel notes, where does Mina's card place the split sandbags?

Split sandbags in frame 400 are set directly against the reel notes' claim that the levee held.

  13. 13.Apologia

Forty gray pages rested on the Lowell turbine bench, Otis's apologia for the narrower runner he had chosen after the 1922 flood. Bound after the 1922 flood, the gray volume defends the narrower runner to what purpose?

The forty gray pages exist to defend, at length, the narrower runner Otis chose after the 1922 flood.

  14. 14.Apodictic

Interference fringes closed on the third trial in the Zurich lens lab. Leah stamped the focal-length sheet apodictic and moved it to the finished drawer. After the fringes close, what further dispute does Leah's stamp leave open?

Closed fringes are handled as a finished demonstration, so Leah treats the focal length as past dispute.

  15. 15.Aporia

The Denali chain stayed coiled at the stake where Anika had written aporia, the magnetic bearing and the sun sight having canceled each other. Bearings canceled and the chain still coiled, what blocks the next length of line?

Canceled bearings supply no justified next step, and the coiled chain marks the place where reasoning has stalled.

  16. 16.Assertion

Block letters filled line one of the Galveston seawall clipboard: Rhee's assertion that the new weep holes would empty a six-inch rain before the following tide. Others will want to test Rhee's drainage line: what status does it claim?

The weep-hole result is written up as fact and left where others can test it.

  17. 17.Assumption

Under the Pittsburgh truss diagram, Hank's pencil recorded an assumption that every rivet still carried its original load, though none on the board had been pulled. Which rivet load is proceeding without a pull-test?

Full original load is used for rivets nobody has pulled, a premise taken as given without being shown.

  18. 18.Attestation

The cracked bell still warm in the Cincinnati yard, Ade signed an attestation into the pour log that the alloy had reached eleven hundred eighty degrees before the mold was filled. Beyond the numeral, what contribution does Ade's signature make?

Ade's signature adds his declaration that he witnessed eleven hundred eighty degrees, so the figure enters the log on his word.

  19. 19.Axiom

Inside the lid of the Greenwich chronometer case, Maren had painted an axiom: two clocks that agree at noon still need a star sight before either is trusted. For the checks that come afterward, what authority does the painted rule claim?

Later checks are meant to begin from the star-sight rule, which the lid offers as a starting principle and does not try to prove.

  20. 20.Axiomatic

A second argument about cold cables died on the Quebec bridge when Noelle called the short dawn reading axiomatic. What status has Noelle already granted the short dawn reading?

Noelle treats the short dawn reading on a cold-stretched cable as obvious from the outset and refuses to reopen it.

  21. 21.Casuistry

Frayed strands could pass the Salem ropewalk manual once an order said urgent, and Gus charged that exceptions chapter with casuistry. Urgent orders excusing frayed strands: which bending of the ban is Gus naming?

The ban on frayed strands stays in print and then bends whenever an order is marked urgent, principles applied until they excuse what they forbid.

  22. 22.Categorical

No hedge followed the line Lila wrote on the Tucson solar-log board, and she marked that line categorical: output falls once dust covers more than a third of any panel. What hold does Lila's dust line claim over panel output?

Lila states the output drop outright, with no condition attached to the dusty panels.

  23. 23.Caveat

A red sticker on the Antarctic ice-core box carried Petra's caveat that the 1816 ash band might be volcanic or mill smoke, leaving the famine date unfixed. Volcanic or mill smoke: how far can the ash band still push Petra's famine date?

Petra's sticker warns that the ash band, possibly volcanic or mill smoke, cannot by itself settle the famine date.

  24. 24.Circularity

Examiner Cho's ring of arrows in the Chicago patent office, captioned circularity, ran from novelty to the claim and from the claim back to novelty. What failure does the ring of arrows expose?

Novelty is proved by the claim, and the claim by the novelty, so each half borrows the support it was supposed to supply.

  25. 25.Circumstantial

Nobody had been seen near the hull at dawn, yet Oksana logged a crescent of green antifouling on a Norfolk dry-dock bolt and filed the smear as circumstantial. Nobody at the hull, only green paint on the bolt: what is going into Oksana's file?

The green smear can suggest that something touched the hull and cannot display who did it or when.

  26. 26.Cogent

On a third reading of the Langley wind-tunnel notes, Dev bracketed paragraph four as cogent because each pressure drop was tied to a numbered valve. What praise is that bracket giving the paragraph?

Numbered valves make the pressure story tight enough that Dev is willing to be convinced by paragraph four.

  27. 27.Coherence

Yuki's check, labeled coherence, failed on a Kyoto bus-map plate that ended the midnight loop at the river and also ran that same loop on to the depot. What has broken between those two endings?

One midnight loop cannot end at the river and also run on to the depot, so the plate's parts no longer fit.

  28. 28.Conjecture

One warm brick in the Reykjavik greenhouse floor was enough for Sigrid to pencil a conjecture that the north pipe had cracked, the soil probes still latched in their case. How much proof is traveling with that cracked-pipe note?

A cracked north pipe is offered while the soil probes are still latched, a conclusion put forward before the evidence is enough.

  29. 29.Consensus

Nine initials gathered under cell B on the Mauna Kea mirror-bench sheet, and Beni filed the page as the consensus that this cell had drifted. Which shared judgment do the nine initials record?

Nine initials under cell B show the bench converging on one shared judgment about which mirror drifted.

  30. 30.Contention

Above the leaning fence in the Santa Fe plat drawer, Omar pinned his contention that the iron pin belonged to the 1904 survey. Against the leaning fence, Omar's pin is being identified as belonging to which survey?

While the dispute stays open, Omar keeps pressing that the iron pin, not the leaning fence, is the 1904 marker.

  31. 31.Contradiction

Tuesday's margin in the St. Augustine tide book called the inlet closed, the facing table listed three departures that morning, and Tess underlined the pair as a contradiction. Closed inlet, three departures, one Tuesday: how can Tess's two entries coexist?

A closed inlet and three morning departures cannot both be true, so each entry rules the other out.

  32. 32.Counterargument

In the margin of the Seattle landslide memo, Amina set a counterargument against the rain-primed slope by citing a piezometer that had stayed dry all week. Which way does the dry instrument push that rain claim?

The dry piezometer is offered as a reason to reject the claim that last week's rain primed the slope.

  33. 33.Counterexample

Kiln 3 at the Moravian tile works had been logged as uniformly pale until Rosa laid one cobalt shard on the batch sheet and tagged the shard the counterexample. How is one blue shard meant to land on a log that said pale?

A single cobalt shard is enough to defeat the batch sheet's claim that every piece from kiln 3 came out pale.

  34. 34.Counterfactual

The storm column of the Port Townsend ferry log holds Ellis's counterfactual about the four-in-the-morning sailing: had the ramp kept its angle, the truck would have stayed aboard. Although the ramp was never held, which outcome is the storm column still judging?

Ellis reasons about a ramp angle that was not held and about the truck that would have stayed if it had been.

  35. 35.Corollary

Once Ned granted on the Lockport slate that the upper pool sat three feet high, he wrote beneath it the corollary that the lower gate could not open dry. Once the pool is granted at three feet, the dry lower gate follows as what?

Once the three-foot pool is accepted, the dry lower gate is treated as falling out of that grant at once.

  36. 36.Crux

Farid looped red string around the timing of switch 9 on the Baltimore rail diagram and labeled that loop the crux, before the 2:11 freight or after it passed the tower. Which timing of that switch does the red string treat as the hinge?

Whether switch 9 moved before or after the 2:11 freight is the hinge on which the rest of the path explanation turns.

  37. 37.Deduction

A card in the Halifax chart room said every unlit buoy is off station. From that card alone, Nabil's deduction set buoy 14 outside the channel. Along which route does he travel from the card to buoy 14?

A general rule about every unlit buoy is applied to buoy 14 and yields a particular place for it.

  38. 38.Dialectic

Cured concrete filled one column on the Ann Arbor studio wall, a still-soft core filled the other, and Greta named the answering lines a dialectic. What pattern are the paired columns locking in?

The wall moves only when a claim about cured concrete meets the opposing claim about a still-soft core.

  39. 39.Dictum

Gold letters on the oak beam of the Williamsburg bindery stated Saul's shop dictum: a signature counts as true only when the kettle stitch shows on the first and last sections. With what force is that gold sentence supposed to rule the bench?

Binders are expected to follow the gold kettle-stitch sentence as an authoritative pronouncement, not as a tip from today's job.

  40. 40.Dilemma

Nia propped one card on the Grand Coulee gatehouse console and headed it dilemma. Opening the drum gate would flood the access road. Leaving it shut would overtop the spillway. Road flooded or spillway overtopped: which pair of costs is Nia boxing the operator into?

Both choices damage something, and the card presents flooding the road or overtopping the spillway as the only ways forward.

  41. 41.Disjunction

West lamp failed, or the dusk sensor stuck, with no third fault in the El Paso log: Luz chalked that disjunction across the signal board. With no third fault allowed, lamp and sensor are joined how?

At least one of the two faults, lamp or sensor, is claimed, and the log leaves no third possibility.

  42. 42.Dispositive

Which sail had rubbed the Honolulu pier was closed once Keoni marked the dye match on thread 6 dispositive. What lets him close the sail folder on that match alone?

The dye match on thread 6 is treated as enough to settle which sail rubbed the pier, with no further exhibit required.

  43. 43.Dissent

Four lines at the foot of the Boulder magnetometer report, headed dissent, carried Priya's refusal to sign the truck explanation and the frequency the spike had failed to match. By withholding her signature, what refusal goes into the Boulder report?

Priya states that she will not join the truck conclusion and gives the unmatched frequency as her ground.

  44. 44.Dogma

An old card on the Vienna piano bench, which Abel refused to let anyone test, called it dogma that a soundboard crack always starts at the bass bridge. How shielded from checking is that bass-bridge claim?

The bass-bridge origin of every crack is presented as already closed, and Abel invites no test of the card.

  45. 45.Dubious

Dee brought the stamp down on a Savannah humidity chart whose noon mark sat twenty points above every other sensor in the room: dubious. What judgment lands on that isolated noon mark?

A noon spike twenty points above every neighboring sensor is stamped too doubtful to trust as it stands.

  46. 46.Enthymeme

Hollis's Bangor pulp ticket said only that the roll was light, so the fiber was short, and he labeled the slip an enthymeme. Which piece of that light-to-short step never reached the paper?

The ticket moves from a light roll to short fiber without ever writing the rule that would connect them.

  47. 47.Equivocal

Restored 1952, on a lithograph label in the Mexico City archive, could name the stone or only the paper proof, and Ines marked the words equivocal. Does restored 1952 name the stone, the paper proof, or has the label left that open?

Nothing on the label decides whether the stone was restored in 1952 or only the paper proof.

  48. 48.Evidentiary

Frame 12 showed the railing already broken, and Leila moved that contact sheet from the general stack into the evidentiary tray at the Harry Ransom photo lab, ahead of the hour the tape went up. The railing is already broken before any tape, so why move frame 12 into the proof tray?

Leila keeps frame 12 because the early break in the railing can help prove when the damage happened.

  49. 49.Fallacy

Old, therefore safe, therefore the pier is safe: Samir circled that chain in the Oxford pamphlet and wrote fallacy beside it. Age standing in for safety, the pier chain fails where?

Age is treated as if it guaranteed safety, so the chain never gives the pier conclusion real support.

  50. 50.Falsifiable

One bottle under the lab cutoff would knock down the chlorophyll claim Anouk had tagged falsifiable on the Scripps pier whiteboard. What could that low bottle do to her sentence?

Anouk names a bottle under the lab cutoff as an observation that would prove the chlorophyll claim false.

  51. 51.Generalization

Six cracked insulators along a single Spokane spur became, in Della's report, a generalization about every porcelain piece west of the river. How wide a leap does the report make past those six cracks?

Six cracked insulators on one spur are asked to cover every porcelain piece west of the river, past the cases actually in hand.

  52. 52.Germane

Cattle counts left the Denver water-rights folder for a side pocket once Mateo tabbed only the 1911 ditch decree germane. Why are the cattle counts walked out of the main folder?

The cattle counts do not bear on the water dispute, so only the 1911 ditch decree stays in the main folder.

  53. 53.Hearsay

"Rafi heard Lena say the piling moved" came back across the Astoria desk with hearsay written over it, Hugh having asked for Lena's own hand. Why refuse Rafi's slip while Lena's own hand is still missing?

Hugh will not let Rafi's report of Lena's words stand in for Lena's own statement.

  54. 54.Hypothesis

Noor taped a hypothesis to the Monterey aquarium glass, blaming the cloudy batch on a clogged protein skimmer, and she left the sentence there until a dawn cleanup could test it. Still taped until dawn, the clogged-skimmer account is waiting to be what?

The clogged-skimmer account is held only until the dawn cleanup can keep it or drop it.

  55. 55.Implication

A note under Pavel's Albany zoning sketch named the implication of measuring the setback from the porch: the east wall already stood on the neighbor's lot. Measure from the porch, and the east wall's trespass comes along as what consequence?

Measuring the setback from the porch commits the sketch to an east wall that already stands on the neighbor's lot.

  56. 56.Implicit

No notice hung in the Porto cooperage, yet the implicit rule acted at once whenever Paulo found three broken staves: that cask came off the rack before noon. How can a limit he never posted still move the casks?

Nobody posted the three-stave limit, yet the crew treats it as binding and clears the cask before noon.

  57. 57.Incontrovertible

Three receivers in Key West agreed on the same nail head to within a centimeter, and Nessa called the fix incontrovertible as she locked the coordinate book. A centimeter among three receivers: how much dispute does Nessa leave open on the nail?

Three receivers agreeing within a centimeter let Nessa treat the nail's position as closed to serious dispute.

  58. 58.Induction

Five wet ore cars filled a column in Glen's Marquette notebook, and the margin named the step induction, from those cars to a claim that the whole train had shipped above eight percent moisture. In which direction does that margin reason?

Five particular wet cars are used to support a moisture claim about every car in the train.

  59. 59.Inference

A salt ring on the concrete of the Yuma cistern house became Elena's inference, written beside it, that the float had stuck open for at least a day. What move is she making from the ring to the float?

Elena reads the salt ring as a sign and draws a stuck-float conclusion the concrete itself does not state.

  60. 60.Invalid

Miriam's red X landed on the last step of an Iowa City workshop proof, and she marked the step invalid: every tested bolt had passed, and the step still claimed every bolt on the bridge. Why does Miriam's red X land on the step that outruns the bolts she tested?

A pass among the bolts that were tested does not yield a pass for the bolts nobody tested, so the last step's conclusion does not follow.

  61. 61.Irrefutable

Grain matched grain between the pier 4 core and the mix design, and Sable dated the Mobile lab book under the word irrefutable next to the charge that the specified mix had been used. The core matches the mix design grain for grain, and Sable dates the charge as past what?

The grain-for-grain match is presented as leaving no successful reply to the charge that the specified mix was used.

  62. 62.Justification

Six bullets on Jon's stapled sheet, each naming a weak layer in the Banff snow pit, formed the justification for keeping the avalanche gate closed. Each bullet names a weak layer: which reasons do they give the closed gate?

Each bullet ties the closed gate to a weak layer Jon can point to in that morning's snow pit, giving the decision its reasons.

  63. 63.Maxim

Apprentices at the Durham clock bench pointed to Ada's stenciled maxim whenever the order of work was disputed: a rate error doubles if you oil before you time. When apprentices dispute which task comes first, what work does the oiling stencil do?

Apprentices treat the short oiling rule as reason enough to settle which task at the bench comes first.

  64. 64.Non-sequitur

Pelicans, then a therefore about a high gauge: Marlow tagged the pair at the Santa Cruz tide desk a non-sequitur. Between pelicans and a therefore about the gauge, which connection never shows up?

Nothing about the pelicans gives a reason for a high gauge, yet the next line presents a therefore.

  65. 65.Nuance

Deep red, Tomas wrote into the Oaxaca cochineal note, held only for shade-dried lots, and he called that roof-versus-shade cut a nuance. Shade-dried lots keep deep red while roof-dried lots lose it, so where does the added clause draw its line?

Separating shade-dried lots from roof-dried lots stops "deep red" from covering every lot, a fine distinction that changes the claim.

  66. 66.Objection

A blue sheet clipped to the Milwaukee bridge calculation carried June's objection to the live-load figure, which had ignored the streetcar still crossing at dawn. Ignoring the dawn streetcar, June's blue sheet challenges the live-load figure on what ground?

June challenges the live-load number because the calculation left out the weight of the dawn streetcar.

  67. 67.Paradox

Siri pinned a note labeled paradox on the Bergen ferry board: the heavier dawn boat drew less water than the empty noon boat, and the readings kept confirming the pair. What apparently impossible pairing is the pin holding in place?

A heavier boat drawing less water looks impossible, and the readings still will not let the office dismiss the pair.

  68. 68.Paralogism

Beside a tidy student proof at the Cambridge optics bench, Helen wrote paralogism where "some lenses flare" had been replaced by "all lenses flare". What smuggled swap is she diagnosing?

The proof looks formally neat while "some lenses flare" has been widened to "all lenses flare."

  69. 69.Pertinent

Depth logs alone remained on the Tulsa lease counter after Brooks returned the family letters to the cabinet, the logs being the stack he had marked pertinent. What requirement have the letters failed?

Family letters do not speak to the lease question, so only the depth logs, which do, remain on the counter.

  70. 70.Philippic

For three unbroken minutes the Cleveland rail-tower speaker carried yardmaster Del's philippic against the claim that the new timetable was safe, while Vic wrote at the open window. Three unbroken minutes against a safe timetable pour out of the speaker as what kind of speech?

For three minutes without a pause, Del denounces the claim that the new timetable is safe.

  71. 71.Platitude

No measurement, date, or height accompanied "safety is important," so Patrice struck it from the Des Moines levee brochure as a platitude. Why is that opening unfit for a reader who needs facts about the levee?

A reader can agree that safety is important and still learn no measurement, date, or height about the levee.

  72. 72.Polemic

Fraser's thin book lay open on the Edinburgh anatomy-museum bench, a polemic that spent every page arguing the 1880 plaque had mislabeled the whale rib and that named each measurement. Every page names a measurement and attacks the 1880 plaque toward what end?

Page after page, with every measurement named, is aimed at overturning the plaque's label for the whale rib.

  73. 73.Postulate

Ahead of any calcination number, the Jingdezhen kiln card received Mei's postulate that the clay shrinks four percent between cone 6 and cone 8. Blank calcination lines, and a four-percent shrink already written: why put that figure down first?

The four-percent shrink is written down before any firing numbers so the later notes have a figure to calculate from.

  74. 74.Precedent

Same tide, same draft, same bend as the 1938 grounding at buoy 11: Ambrose cited that wreck as precedent and refused the night departure from Charleston. Tonight's refusal borrows that old grounding for what purpose?

Ambrose treats the 1938 grounding, at the same tide and draft, as a reason to refuse tonight's departure.

  75. 75.Premise

Line A of Soren's Vancouver truss sheet stated a premise, snow load not above forty pounds a square foot, and every line under it used the figure. On what foundation do the lower lines rest?

Every line under line A draws on the forty-pound snow load as the statement from which the sheet proceeds.

  76. 76.Presumption

Until a diver could surface at the Thunder Bay wreck, Kim's chalk presumption held that the missing prop still lay under the stern. While the diver is still down, where does the chalk say the missing prop lies?

The buried prop stands as the working claim unless the diver surfaces and defeats it.

  77. 77.Prima-facie

Drew's prima-facie tag on the torn sail in the Newport loft called the weave mismatch enough to open a claim until a lab report arrived. Open a claim now, and wait for the lab: how far does the weave mismatch carry Drew today?

On its face the weave mismatch is enough to open the claim, and it keeps that force only until a lab report can answer it.

  78. 78.Probative

Which pot had cracked, Uma wrote on a probative label in the Corning melt lab, was a question the shard's refractive index could help settle. What proving task is she giving the index?

Uma keeps the refractive index because it tends to tie the shard to one cracked pot rather than another.

  79. 79.Proposition

Cut spray without slowing the boat, by a three-degree hull tilt: that proposition stood on a card Eero left in the middle of the Helsinki loft for the group to adopt or set aside. Take up the three-degree tilt or set the card aside: which response is Eero waiting on?

The three-degree tilt is offered for the group to accept or set aside, not announced as already settled.

  80. 80.Proviso

Under the Tunis mosaic contract, Samira inked a proviso that the border repair could proceed only if the tesserae came from the same quarry lot as the 1920 patch. What condition has that ink written into the permission?

Samira allows the border repair only when the tesserae come from the same quarry lot as the 1920 patch.

  81. 81.Putative

Niall's Dublin warehouse tag named Morgan Keene the putative owner and cited a directory listing, with no bill of sale in the folder. How is ownership being assigned in the absence of a sale?

A directory listing supplies a reputation of ownership, and no bill of sale establishes that Morgan Keene owns the goods.

  82. 82.Qualification

Green ink in Carmen's Miami flood memo saved the sentence "streets will drain" only as a qualification covering rains under two inches an hour. Under two inches of rain an hour, what happens to the reach of Carmen's drainage sentence?

Green ink restricts "streets will drain" to rains under two inches an hour, so the sentence no longer covers every storm.

  83. 83.Quibble

A crack crossed the main lens in the Flagstaff dome, and the first twenty minutes of Seth's log were a quibble over the brand of cleaning cloth. While the lens stays cracked, what side issue fills the first twenty minutes?

The brand of cleaning cloth fills the first twenty minutes while the crack across the main lens goes unaddressed.

  84. 84.Rationale

Three sheets in Tove's folder, wind above thirty knots, a rotten stringer, and a missing cleat, made up the rationale for closing the Sitka floatplane dock. Thirty-knot wind, a rotten stringer, a missing cleat: the folder exists to explain which decision?

Wind above thirty knots, a rotten stringer, and a missing cleat are the grounds given for closing the dock.

  85. 85.Rebuttal

Beneath a criticism of the Houston bat-bridge count, Imani slipped a rebuttal showing that the infrared gate had double-counted bats that circled once. Circling bats counted twice are offered in order to do what to the attack on the tally?

The double-counted circling bats are offered in order to defeat the criticism of the tally.

  86. 86.Red-herring

Half a page in the middle of Farah's Montreal reservoir memo, while the joint leak was still the question, was a red-herring paragraph on the color of the new fencing. Fence color in the middle of a leak debate does what to Farah's real question?

Fence color pulls attention off the only question that matters, whether the reservoir joint leaks.

  87. 87.Refutation

An empty gas main, traced on paper Colin pinned in the Glasgow archive, was his refutation of the claim that the lamp had burned all night. Given an empty main, what happens to the story that the lamp burned all night?

A lamp cannot have burned all night from a main that held nothing, so the trace shows the story does not stand.

  88. 88.Rejoinder

The contractor's answer arrived at noon, and Amin's rejoinder left the Ottawa River gauge office that same afternoon: the answer had ignored the flat line on gauge 3. After the contractor's noon answer, Amin's afternoon note replies to what?

Amin is answering the contractor's noon reply, not opening the dispute from the first complaint.

  89. 89.Relevance

Asha stamped relevance on the Perth core box and wrote beneath it a demand to know whether grain size spoke to the sinking or only to the color of the sand. What bearing must grain size show before she will count it?

Grain size counts only if it helps decide why the structure sank, which is the question actually in dispute.

  90. 90.Reservation

The lean measurement Hadi would sign; the traffic cause he would not. His reservation went into the Rabat minaret report in the same ink. Where does his agreement stop once one finding is signed and the other is withheld?

Hadi's signature covers the lean measurement and stops short of the claim that traffic caused it.

  91. 91.Riposte

In the Lyon silk loft, Camille's riposte came in the same breath the critic said the new warp would pill, because that critic had approved the identical twist on Tuesday's sample card. What does she send back before the critic can continue?

Camille immediately turns the critic's own Tuesday approval of that twist back against the pilling charge.

  92. 92.Sophistry

Older than forty years had been quietly substituted for unsafe, and Zara blocked the pier editorial from the Mumbai night desk as sophistry. Swapping older-than-forty for unsafe, the editorial earns its conclusion by what trick?

The editorial changes what "unsafe" means halfway through and then pretends a structural conclusion has been earned.

  93. 93.Specious

A vertical scale that began at ninety let a hairline of crack growth fill the Oslo tunnel chart, and Lars called that comfort specious. Starting the vertical scale at ninety makes a hairline of growth fill the page with what false comfort?

A scale that begins at ninety makes a hairline of crack growth look exact and alarming, a comfort the data do not earn.

  94. 94.Spurious

Market crowds and rainfall rose together in the Nairobi ledger, neither having produced the other, and Wanjiku marked the link spurious. What false causal look is she rejecting?

Crowds and rainfall rise together, and Wanjiku denies that either rise produced the other, rejecting a connection that only looks real.

  95. 95.Straw-man

Niamh's Cork bus-lane flyer boxed the opponents under the label straw-man and said they wanted no buses at all, though their letter had asked only for a wider merge at the river bridge. What substitute has the flyer installed in place of that letter?

"No buses at all" is easier to scorn than a request for a wider merge, and it is not what the opponents' letter said.

  96. 96.Substantiation

Morning oscilloscope photo, morning calibration slip: Jonah clipped both to the Ketchikan report as substantiation for a split beam. What are those two attachments doing under the claim?

The oscilloscope photo and the calibration slip give the split-beam statement concrete support so it is no longer bare.

  97. 97.Supposition

Grant the indigo vat alkaline, the corner of Yasmin's Fez notebook said, and the next three color predictions treated that supposition as given. What temporary acceptance are the predictions relying on?

Yasmin's color predictions proceed only by taking the indigo vat as alkaline for the sake of the argument.

  98. 98.Surmise

A single scuff on the brass rail of the Valparaíso funicular was the whole of Teo's evidence, and his duty card carried the surmise that a crate had ridden after midnight. From one brass scuff, the duty card places a crate on the car at what hour?

A midnight crate is read off a single scuff and little else, a conclusion drawn from a thin sign.

  99. 99.Syllogism

Every unsprung wheel gains; this wheel is unsprung; therefore this wheel gains. Lenka called the three lines on the Prague clock-museum rail a syllogism. Which argument pattern has Lenka posted on the rail?

Two premises about unsprung wheels lead, in a fixed pattern, to a conclusion about this particular wheel.

  100. 100.Tacit

Two fingers from Anja, a clip-in at the anchor, and no word spoken: the Chamonix rope team was running on a tacit agreement. With the rule never spoken, what carries the clip-in?

The anchor clips in on two fingers because the team already shares the rule, with nobody needing to say it.

  101. 101.Tangential

Whether pier 2 had lost mortar was the open question in Rocio's Pont du Gard report, and the paragraph she marked tangential described the caretaker's hat. A whole paragraph on a hat, with mortar still undecided: what connection is missing?

A paragraph on the caretaker's hat brushes the report without helping anyone decide whether pier 2 lost mortar.

  102. 102.Tautology

The buoy drifted because it moved from its position. Eve circled that sentence in Caleb's Woods Hole abstract and wrote tautology in the margin. What information, if any, does the circled sentence add?

Drifting is only restated as moving from a position, so the because-clause adds nothing new.

  103. 103.Tenable

Core photos reached the Moab shed, the silt layers matched a short violent fill, and Harper called the flash-flood claim tenable. After those core photos, does Harper drop the flood account or keep arguing it?

Matching silt from a short, violent fill gives Harper grounds on which the flash-flood account can still be defended.

  104. 104.Tenet

On the saw rack of the Nara temple-roof workshop, Sho lettered a tenet: a ridge beam must be crowned, never flat, before any tile is set. Sho's ridge-beam rule is being held as what sort of workshop commitment?

The crowned ridge beam is lettered as a basic principle of the craft, not as a tip for a single roof.

  105. 105.Thesis

Every later tab in the Lagos lagoon binder pointed back to Tunde's opening card, the thesis that the 1978 channel cut, not the new pier, had raised the flood line. Every later tab points back to the channel-cut card, so which claim is the binder built to defend?

Later tabs are arranged to defend one central claim, that the 1978 channel cut raised the flood line, and to meet the rival pier account.

  106. 106.Truism

Water flows downhill opened the Carenage pump memo, a truism Claudette struck because nobody in the pipe-diameter dispute had denied it. Why remove a sentence no one had contested?

That water flows downhill is obviously true, and nobody was contesting it, so it does nothing to settle the pipe diameter.

  107. 107.Untenable

When the Rotterdam gauges settled at the same height on both sides of the gate, Bram marked untenable the claim that pressure alone was holding the gate shut. What becomes of the pressure explanation once the heights match?

Equal water on both sides removes the pressure difference the explanation required, so Bram cannot keep it.

  108. 108.Warrant

Under her claim that the Newburyport meetinghouse beam was white oak, Joan wrote a warrant: ring-porous latewood of that width belongs to white oak and not to red oak. Latewood of that width on the beam, white oak on the label: what lets Joan cross from one to the other?

The latewood rule is the link that lets a measured ring width count as evidence for the name white oak.
