Health Education Systems Admission Assessment Reading
Main ideas, details, inferences, word meaning, and purpose in short passages.
These questions are original. This is not an official Health Education Systems Admission Assessment, and FreeExam is not affiliated with Elsevier.
Badge Printer
The campus clinic replaced the paper sign-in sheet with a badge printer. Students tap an ID card, confirm a phone number, and wait for a sticker that shows the room number.
Eastbound Hold
A card in the bus shelter says the eastbound coach will wait three minutes at the campus stop when the library clock shows the hour. Riders who arrive after that wait must take the next coach.
Locked Carrel
A note on a locked library carrel says the spare key stays at the third-floor desk until noon, and after noon the carrel remains locked for a reserved exam. The note never says the exam was canceled.
Tepid Rinse
The lab handout tells students to rinse glassware in tepid water, not in water hot enough to fog a pair of goggles. The same line warns that a cold rinse can crack a warm beaker.
Stair Poster
A poster by the library stairwell asks readers who are carrying only one book to use the stairs, so the elevator stays free for carts and for people who need it. The poster names no fine and no closing time.
Wristband Colors
At the student health desk, a blue wristband means the visit is for a vaccine, and a yellow wristband means the visit is for a throat swab. Both colors sit in labeled cups.
Red Return Rack
Returned library books sit on a red rolling rack until the afternoon scan. A book on that rack is still charged to the borrower, even if it looks as though it has been shelved.
Pressure Pause
A clinic note tells staff to pause a blood-pressure reading when the patient has just climbed the stairs. They should wait two minutes and then wrap the cuff again.
Platform Stripe
Yellow stripes on the train platform mark where the first car door opens. A conductor's note says riders with a stroller should stand on the stripe nearest the elevator, not on the stripe at the far end.
Thursday Hours
Professor Okonkwo moved Thursday office hours from the lab to the library seminar room, and the door card welcomes drop-in visits from 2 to 3. Questions about the Friday quiz should be asked before 2:40.
Corridor Sign
A sign above the clinic corridor says patients may ambulate to the restroom if a nurse has cleared the walk. Beside the word is a drawing of a person using the handrail.
Group Slip
The library printed a slip that asks a study group to book a room once it has three or more people. The slip prints the booking link and no other message.
Sample Window
The campus lab accepts blood-draw samples from 7:30 until 11:00. A sample that arrives at 11:05 is stored for the next morning and is not tested the same day.
Night Loop
After 9 in the evening the campus loop bus skips the north garage and stops only at the library and the residence hall. The daytime route still includes the garage.
Hold Shelf Mix
Two novels with the same title sat on the library hold shelf: the blue-sticker copy was Mara's, and the torn-cover copy was Luis's. A clerk had filed both under M by mistake.
Needle Step
The skills sheet says to occlude the vein two inches above the draw site before sliding the needle out. A diagram shows a gloved finger pressing that spot.
Hedge Notice
A notice on the campus shuttle asks riders to let the driver pause at the science crosswalk even when nobody is visible, because the hedge blocks the view. The notice does not change the fare.
Dental Clipboard
New patients at the dental clinic finish the clipboard before they sit down. The first page asks for a preferred pharmacy, the second asks about jaw pain, and insurance cards are copied at the window rather than on the clipboard.
Stamped Slip
To move from the red line to the campus bus, a rider needs the slip the rail agent stamps at 4:10. The bus driver accepts that stamped slip until 4:40 and returns any slip that has no stamp.
Green Desk Lamp
The library turns on the green desk lamp when a study room is ten minutes past its ending time. The next booking starts when the lamp is lit, though the room key still works for two more minutes.
Fever Protocol
The clinic protocol calls a temperature febrile when it is 100.4 degrees or higher. A reading of 99.8 is written down as warm but not febrile, and that patient stays in the regular chair.
Outdoor Bin
The library lobby sign says that putting a book in the outdoor bin before closing keeps the morning line short. The sign thanks readers who make that extra stop.
Allergy Yarn
If a patient reports a penicillin allergy, the clinic nurse ties a red yarn band to the chart and writes the drug name on the inside of the folder. A green band is used only for a latex allergy.
Missed Campus Stop
The night tram announcement says a rider who stays on past the campus stop may get off at the hospital and ride back at no extra charge within twenty minutes. After twenty minutes the return ride needs a new ticket.
Yellow Reserve Tag
A yellow tag on a library book means a professor has placed it on course reserve for three days. The tag lists the course number and does not list the professor's home phone.
Imaging Card
The imaging card asks the patient to lie prone, face toward the table, with both arms above the head. A side drawing shows the chest resting on the pad.
Fare Box Note
The transit office posted a note because crumpled bills jam the campus bus fare box. The note asks riders to use coins or a campus card, and it adds that a soft unfolded bill can jam the box too.
Tube Order
In the teaching lab, students fill the lavender tube before the green tube. Lavender is for a blood-cell count, green is for a chemistry panel, and labels go on only after both tubes are filled.
Platform Bars
When the platform screen shows a blue bar, the next campus train is four minutes away. A red bar means the train is holding at the bridge, and the minutes on the screen then stop changing.
Third-Floor Stacks
On the library's third floor, quiet talk is allowed at the end window, while the tables in the center stay silent. A student who needs to practice a talk is sent to the window, not to a center table.
Skin-Spot Card
The clinic writes benign on a skin-spot card when the spot is harmless and does not need removal. A spot marked that way is photographed and left alone.
Fasting Poster
A poster in the clinic waiting room names water, not soda, as the drink to finish before a fasting lab ends. It reminds patients that the fast still bans food.
Ice-Pack Rule
After a vaccine, the campus clinic offers an ice pack only if the arm is still sore twenty minutes later. Students who feel fine at that point leave without a pack.
Rain Boarding
On rainy days the campus shuttle boards under the library overhang instead of at the curb pole. A rider who waits at the pole can miss the coach, because it does not pull up to the curb in the rain.
Map Drawer
Campus maps are kept in the flat drawer under the library atlas stand. A map may leave the drawer for one hour if the borrower leaves an ID at the desk.
Hidden Infection
The infection-control slide says a latent infection is present but is not producing symptoms yet. Students circle the word and write 'hidden for now' in the margin.
Elevator Card
A laminated card in the clinic elevator says stretchers and people using a cane board first. Visitors carrying only a clipboard are asked to take the next car.
Dose Cups
The evening medication window uses a blue cup for pills and a clear cup for liquid. A patient who receives both carries one of each, and staff do not pour the liquid into the blue cup.
Bike Hooks
The front car of the commuter train holds four bikes on hooks. A rider boarding with a fifth bike must wait for the next train, even when passenger seats are empty.
Shared Lamp
Each library table card says the shared lamp stays on until the last reader at that table leaves. A reader who wants the lamp off should move to a carrel instead of darkening the table for everyone else.
Pain Poster
On the clinic poster, acute pain means pain that started recently and is sharp, unlike pain that has lasted for months. A lightning bolt marks the acute column.
Gel Pump
Before the skills practical, the campus lab asks each student to use the gel pump once and then show dry hands to the proctor. A second pump is used only if the first one is empty.
Route C
Route C of the campus bus does not run on Sundays. A printed slip says Monday through Saturday service ends at 10:15 in the evening at the library turnaround.
Flashlight Glare
The library help card says a phone flashlight on the barcode makes self-checkout fail, so the first step is to shade the code with a hand and try again. Staff do not need to be called for that first failure.
Acid Station
The chemistry station says to dilute the acid by adding acid into water, never water into acid. A footnote on the same card defines dilute as make less concentrated.
Visit Card
The clinic mails a card that asks patients to circle morning or afternoon and mail the card back by Friday. The card is not a bill, and it lists no prices.
Two Hooks
Exam room 2 has one hook for the patient's gown and a separate hook for a coat. The gown hook is beside the table, and the coat hook is behind the door.
Twelve-Minute Transfer
Riders may step from the campus bus onto the city tram within twelve minutes of the bus arrival. The tram agent then punches the bus ticket, and the punched ticket covers the tram fare.
Found ID Box
The library keeps found student IDs in a wooden box for seven days. On the eighth day the cards go to campus security, and a note asks owners to bring a second form of ID when they pick one up.
Exercise Sheet
The exercise sheet says to begin supine, on the back, with the knees bent. An arrow then shows the student rolling to one side.
Warning Slip
After two warnings, a librarian hands a loud table a slip that says the group may stay if voices drop. The slip also prints the room-booking address.
Twelve-Hour Fast
Patients start a twelve-hour fast at 8 in the evening when the blood draw is at 8 in the morning. Water is allowed during the fast, but coffee is not, even when it is black.
White Line
When every seat on the campus train is taken, riders may stand only behind the white line near the doors. Standing farther into the aisle is not allowed, because that space is kept clear of the operator's cab.
Spine Letter
A freshman asked why a spine label starts with Q. The library desk card says Q marks science, and those books are shelved on the second floor, east side.
Evening Dose
The discharge line says that skipping the evening dose can exacerbate the cough. The nurse wrote 'make worse' just above that word.
Glove Drive
The clinic bulletin asks staff to bring an unopened box of gloves for the student-run clinic downtown. The drive ends Thursday at noon, and opened boxes are turned away.
Drawer Numbers
In the supply drawer, size 1 is a small adhesive bandage and size 3 is a large one. Size 2 is a wrap, not an adhesive bandage, and restocking means matching the number on the box to the number on the bin.
Signal Delay
The station board shows a twelve-minute delay for the train that serves the medical campus, caused by a signal repair. The same board says the later trains are on time.
Pencil Loan
The library loans a pencil for the testing room if the student leaves a shoe or a student ID. Pens are not allowed in that room, so the desk does not loan them.
Ankle Outlook
The counselor told the student that the prognosis for full recovery of the sprained ankle was good if rest continued. She set that outlook apart from any guess about how the sprain happened.
Saturday Table
A flyer on the clinic door asks nursing students to sign up for a Saturday blood-pressure table at the campus fair. The signup clipboard is inside the office, and the cutoff is Friday at 4.
Mask Box
Visitors with a cough take a mask from the box on the clinic counter before they reach the desks. The box is restocked at noon and at 5, and a visitor who finds it empty should tell the clerk.
Express Stops
The express bus to the hospital skips the shopping center and the high school. It stops at the library, the campus, and the hospital, while the local bus still serves the skipped stops.
Atlas Rule
The atlas sign says the big book must stay in the reading room and may not be carried to a carrel. Using it at a table inside that room is allowed, and a student who needs a carrel can ask for the smaller desk atlas.
Vaccine Footnote
The vaccine chart marks a live vaccine as contraindicated after a recent high fever. A footnote says the word means the vaccine should not be given in that case.
Parade Closing
A clinic posting says the building will close at 2, rather than at 5, on the day of the campus parade. Patients with later appointments are asked to call and move them, and the posting notes that the parade does not pass the clinic door.
Lid Colors
In the teaching lab, urine samples get a green lid and saliva samples get a white lid. A red lid means the sample is for practice only and must not be sent to the partner clinic.
Last Campus Train
The last campus train leaves the library station at 11:40. A rider who arrives at 11:47 can still catch the city bus at the same curb, which runs until 12:30, because the train does not wait past 11:40.
Room B Key
Group study room B opens with a key from the library desk, and that key must be back by the end of the hour or the next group cannot get in. Room A uses a keypad code rather than a key.
Abdomen Step
The exam checklist says to palpate the abdomen before listening with the stethoscope. A coach wrote 'feel with the hand' beside that first step.
Bench Sign
A sign on the clinic side door says the bench outside is smoke-free, including vapor products, and it points smokers to the far parking row. The sign is not a map of the whole campus.
Arrival Order
The student clinic files charts by the time the patient arrived, not by last name. A patient who arrives at 9:10 is placed after one who arrived at 9:05, even if the later last name comes first in the alphabet.
River Gate
While the footbridge is under repair, the campus bus adds a stop at the river gate, and that stop will be removed when the bridge reopens on May 3. Until then, riders who used the bridge are told to board at the gate.
Chapter Scan
The library scans a chapter only when the book is not allowed to leave the building. The file goes to the student's campus email by 4 in the afternoon, and personal email addresses are not used.
Rash Brochure
A clinic brochure contrasts a chronic rash, one that keeps returning for months, with a rash that appeared yesterday and is already fading. The chronic example is printed inside a box.
Side Tent
During flu season the clinic asks coughing patients to check in at the side tent before they enter the main lobby. The tent has its own clipboard, and patients who are not coughing use the regular desk.
Pill Splitter
The clinic loans a pill splitter for tablets that have a score line and asks for it back the same day. A tablet with no score line should not be split with the tool, and the loan is written on a sticky note rather than in the medical chart.
Headway Sign
A sign above the platform says campus-line trains run every fifteen minutes from 7 in the morning until 7 in the evening, then every thirty minutes. The sign does not describe a separate weekend schedule.
Carrel Outlets
Library carrels 4 through 8 have outlets, and carrels 1 through 3 do not. A student who needs to charge a laptop should take a higher-numbered carrel, while the lamp in every carrel is wired to the building rather than to those outlets.
Middle Range
The lab comment calls a result ambiguous when it falls in a middle range that neither confirms a condition nor rules it out. The student is told to repeat the test rather than guess.
Day-Before Call
The clinic phones patients the day before a visit and asks them to press 1 to keep the time or 2 to give the slot back. The message does not ask for a credit-card number.
Crutch Fit
Clinic staff set crutch height so two fingers fit between the pad and the underarm. If the crutch touches the underarm they lower it, and they adjust the handgrip only after the height is right.
Folding Bikes
Folding bikes may board the campus train at any hour. Full-size bikes may board only before 7 in the morning and after 7 in the evening, so a rider with a full-size bike at noon has to wait.
Hold Cap
The library allows ten holds at a time. A student who already has ten must cancel one before placing another, and staff will not lift the limit for a course reading.
Cleaning Card
A dental card describes prophylaxis as a cleaning done to prevent disease, not as care for a tooth that already hurts. The card schedules that cleaning twice a year.
Far-Lot Cart
When the near lot is full, the clinic runs a golf-cart shuttle from the far lot every ten minutes until 4 in the afternoon. Patients who can walk the path are asked to leave cart seats for people who cannot.
Outer Pocket
Each stool sample leaves the clinic in a sealed bag, with the form in the outer pocket rather than inside beside the container. The lab rejects the bag if that form is missing or wet.
Single Track
For one week the rail line past the campus uses a single track, so trains leave every forty minutes instead of every twenty. The platform announcement says the usual schedule returns next Monday.
Cart Laptops
Laptops on the library cart may be borrowed for three hours. The charger stays at the desk, the laptop must come back even if the battery still has a charge, and overnight loans are not offered.
Swollen Ankle
The skills teacher pointed to a swollen ankle and said the edema was the swelling itself, not the bruise beside it. Students were told to press gently and watch for a small dent.
Two-Hour Text
Patients may choose a text that arrives two hours before a clinic visit. The text names the room and asks for a reply of YES, and it does not include test results.
Monday Weight
The clinic scale is checked with a 25-pound weight every Monday. If the display is off by more than half a pound, the scale is tagged out and a spare is rolled in, and patients do not step on a tagged scale.
First-Row Belts
The small campus bus has seat belts, and the driver will not leave the curb until riders in the first row have buckled. Riders behind that row are asked to buckle, but the bus does not wait for them.
Red Stamp
A book stamped library use only may be read in the building and may not pass the exit gate. The stamp is red and sits on the title page, while a book without that stamp may go out for three weeks.
Clean Field
The lab guide says an aseptic field is a clean work area kept free of germs. Students who break the field by touching a phone must set it up again.
Last Hour
The campus clinic saves the last hour of each day for walk-in visits, and scheduled visits fill the hours before that. A walk-in patient who arrives earlier is asked to return at the open hour or to take a cancellation if one appears.
Screening Kit
The screening kit includes a card, a brush, and a mailer. The card must dry overnight before it goes into the mailer, because the lab rejects a card that is sent wet.
Ramp Station
When the station elevator is out of service, the campus train still runs, but riders who cannot use the stairs are told to board at the next station, where a ramp is open. An agent at the first station writes a free transfer for that ride.
Birthday Renewal
Library cards expire on the student's birthday. The renewal desk prints a new card the same day if the student brings the old one, and a phone barcode works only until that printed card is ready.
Pink Bowl
The bedside list calls the pink bowl an emesis basin and adds 'for vomit' in parentheses. It is not the basin used for washing hands.
Exit Slot
After a visit, the clinic offers a paper form with three questions and a box for comments, and the form goes into a slot by the exit. The form is optional, and the clinician who just left the room does not read it.
Second Drop
Patients learning the glucose meter prick the side of a fingertip, not the center of the pad. They wipe away the first drop and test the second, and control solution is used on Mondays rather than on every test.
Cord Pull
The night bus will stop between marked stops if a rider pulls the cord at least one block early. A pull at the corner itself is too late, and the driver continues to the next marked stop.
Dust Jackets
The library asks readers to leave dust jackets on new books so the shelf looks even. A jacket taken off at a table should be slipped back on before the book is returned, and jackets are not trash.
Bite Note
The dental note uses occlusion for the way the upper and lower teeth meet. A student who writes 'bite' in the margin is matching the teacher's definition.
Fifteen Minutes
The clinic will still see a patient who is up to fifteen minutes late. At sixteen minutes the time slot is released, and the patient may wait for a no-show or book again, which is the rule printed on the appointment card.
Red Bin
Used needles go into the red sharps bin as soon as the cover is off. A needle is not recapped and does not go in the trash, and the bin is changed when it is three-quarters full.
Missed Connection
A rider who leaves the campus bus at 8:12 can reach the rail platform at 8:18. The train doors close at 8:17, so that rider misses this train and can board the one at 8:32.
