Shared metrics

A data analyst interview on a number more than one team will quote, and on the people that number actually counts.

These prompts are original practice. They are not questions from a named employer or a live hiring loop.

  1. 1.Northwind Clinic's board cell says 48,200 active patients. Billing counted every open chart. Scheduling counted a visit in the last 90 days and got 19,640. The packet never says which rule filled the cell. What has to be true before that cell is quoted again?

  2. 2.Harbor's app shows 12,400 orders shipped on Thursday. The warehouse scan-out log shows 11,150. The gap is 1,250 checkouts cancelled before a picker touched them. Which count belongs in the shared orders-shipped number?

  3. 3.Lumen's web daily count is 820,000 cookie ids. The app count is 310,000 logged-in accounts. Nobody has measured the overlap. The Monday note still says 1.13 million daily users. What is wrong with that sentence?

  4. 4.Parcel Drop's on-time rate is 93% on the carrier file and 86% in support's file, same 20,000 routes. The carrier stops the clock at the end of its window. The text the customer received ended two hours earlier on 18% of routes. Which clock does the shared rate use?

  5. 5.The co-op registrar counts 4,410 enrolled seats. The bursar counts 3,960 paid invoices. Four hundred fifty people hold a seat and a past-due invoice. A donor report needs one students-served figure. What should that figure be tied to?

  6. 6.In one week marketing conversion is 4.2% and product conversion is 11%. Both queries count the same 8,400 purchases. Marketing divides by sessions. Product divides by add-to-cart events. What does the gap show?

  7. 7.On March 18 a chart shows March at $1.84 million and February at $2.61 million. A note says March is down 30%. The $1.84 million is only March 1 through 18, with 13 days left. What comparison can sit next to February?

  8. 8.Weekly actives are 40,000 in the US, 22,000 in the EU, and 18,000 in APAC. The global chart says 71,000. A regional lead adds the regions, gets 80,000, and asks where 9,000 people went. Where are they?

  9. 9.The April churn slide says 6,200 accounts left. That query treats every ended trial as churn. Paid cancellations were 1,140. The retention goal was set on paying accounts. Which number can be checked against the goal?

  10. 10.This Monday the calendar week is up 12% versus last calendar week. The trailing seven days are flat versus the prior seven. Last Monday was a holiday spike, and that spike dropped out of the trailing window this morning. Which reading fits both charts?

  11. 11.Growth wrote the SQL for qualified pipeline. Finance signs the board number. The new code SAVE40 is putting $600,000 of self-serve carts into that pipeline. Growth wants those carts excluded. Who may change the filter?

  12. 12.Product's April revenue is $2.40 million and includes $90,000 refunded in May on April orders. Finance leaves April at $2.40 million gross and books the refund in May. Product calls $2.31 million the April net. What should shared April net use?

  13. 13.Eight percent of May orders have a null ship-to country. Global sales are $5.00 million. The regional bars sum to $4.60 million. APAC's share of those bars fell from 20% to 18%. What happened to the missing $400,000?

  14. 14.Support closed 3,400 tickets last week, from 2,100 requesters. The ops review said 3,400 contacts. The staffing review said 2,100 contacts. Which figure is which?

  15. 15.Fiscal Q1 runs February 1 through April 30 and booked $9.2 million. Calendar Q1 is January through March, and last year's calendar Q1 was $8.7 million. A slide puts those two figures side by side and calls it growth. What is that comparison doing?

  16. 16.January's cohort still active in its third month is 42%. This week's chart says 61% of users who joined at least 90 days ago are active. Leadership treats 61% as an update of the 42%. What are the two percentages of?

  17. 17.Tuesday's marketing sessions include 2.1 million hits from known bot networks. Product excludes those networks and shows 640,000 sessions. Bounce rate is 78% on the marketing table and 36% on the product table. What should the shared bounce rate do with the spike?

  18. 18.EU revenue for June is €1.80 million. One dashboard converts at the June 30 spot and shows $1.94 million. Another converts each day at that day's spot and shows $1.90 million. The review is stuck on the $40,000 gap. What is the gap?

  19. 19.At 3:10 p.m. the live board shows today at $186,000 and yesterday at $410,000. A channel lead posts that today is running at 45% of yesterday. What is today inside that fraction?

  20. 20.Sales says open pipeline is $4.2 million. RevOps says $3.1 million. The $1.1 million difference is the stage won, pending signature, which sales includes and RevOps leaves out. Where does that stage belong in the shared pipeline?

  21. 21.Three May headcount figures arrived. HRIS lists 1,840 active employees, including unpaid leave. Finance's cost headcount is 1,710, excluding unpaid leave and contractors. The people team adds 220 contractors to the HRIS list. Which one is the shared headcount?

  22. 22.Paused plans still carry list price in the product warehouse, which adds $18,000 to the MRR extract. Billing shows $0 for those plans while they are paused. Finance reports paused MRR as zero. What does shared MRR do with a pause?

  23. 23.A full send of 2 million emails clicked at 3.1%. A 40,000-person test clicked at 8%. A recap averages 3.1 and 8 and says the program clicks at 5.55%. What is the send-weighted click rate?

  24. 24.One weekly sales chart starts on Sunday. Another starts on Monday. A promotion on Sunday, November 1 brought in $220,000. The Monday-start chart closes that money in the week of October 26. The Sunday-start chart opens the week of November 1 with it. Why do those weeks disagree?

  25. 25.Yesterday's complete order count was 18,400 at last night's close. A morning batch accepted events up to 30 hours late and revised yesterday to 19,500, up about 6%. Can the stand-up quote 18,400 as the locked day?

  26. 26.Guest checkout is 14% of orders. The CRM customers tile shows 86,000 logged-in accounts. The orders table shows 100,000 orders from about 92,000 distinct emails and accounts. A brief says the company has 86,000 customers and also 100,000 customers. What is being mixed?

  27. 27.Internal accounts placed 2,900 orders on a staff promo, about $180,000, inside a month whose external GMV was $6.4 million. The checkouts were real production rows. Does shared external GMV include them?

  28. 28.Marketplace GMV on the slide is $5.4 million, including $0.7 million of tax and shipping. The merchant deck's sales figure is merchandise only, $4.7 million. A partner asks which one is sales. What do you hand them?

  29. 29.Nine percent of Friday's 22,000 orders were cancelled within 60 minutes. The live board counted all 22,000 and called a record. The next-day board, which drops those cancels, shows 20,020. The stand-up is split on the record. What should the record be compared on?

  30. 30.The definition note says analytics owns the metric and finance owns the published number. Analytics shipped a filter over the weekend. Monday's board pack is 3% under the ledger, $240,000 on an $8 million line. What is the status of that pack?

  31. 31.New purchasers on the app are 12,000. New purchasers on the web are 9,000. Company-wide new purchasers are 18,000. The channel slide adds to 21,000, and someone asks where 3,000 new customers went. What are those 3,000?

  32. 32.Daily active is defined as opened the app on that calendar day. One chart uses a UTC day. Another uses the device's local day. A traveler can land on two local days and one UTC day. Which boundary does the shared global figure publish?

  33. 33.The customer chart excludes employees using a spreadsheet last updated in March. Sixty people hired in April are still inside the April new-customer count of 4,060. What is the external new-customer count under the stated rule?

  34. 34.Resolved within SLA was 71% of all tickets last quarter. This quarter the denominator is only tickets that have a priority, and the rate is 88%. The 1,200 unprioritized tickets dropped out of the base. Staffing did not change. What does the jump show by itself?

  35. 35.March 1 through 11 brought in $440,000. A planning note multiplies by 365/11 and calls $14.6 million the annual run rate. Those 11 days contain 8 weekdays and 3 weekend days. What is the weak step?

  36. 36.Looker shows March sales of $2.10 million on order date. Tableau shows $2.04 million on ship date. March orders shipped in April are $140,000. February orders shipped in March are $80,000. What is the $60,000 gap?

  37. 37.The state file lists 45 schools. The district operates 42 buildings and authorizes 3 charters it does not run. A grant asks for schools served, and the draft uses 45 with no list attached. What does the shared count need?

  38. 38.Monthly actives are 1.2 million, including the free tier. Paid monthly actives are 90,000. A partner slide says 1.2 million users under a heading about the paid product. What should the heading be tied to?

  39. 39.An insurer has 18,400 policies and 15,200 households. Policy retention is 86%. Household retention is 90%, because a household that drops one of two policies still counts as retained. The goal was set on policies. Which rate scores the goal?

  40. 40.Retention measured for seven days from the signup hour is 33%. Calendar week-1 retention is 18%. A Saturday signup has only Sunday left in a week that ends Sunday. Why are the two rates this far apart?

  41. 41.Delivered-only March revenue is $1.70 million. Orders still in transit on March 31 are $300,000, and they land in April's delivered chart. April then looks stronger even when order-month demand is flat. Where does the $300,000 belong?

  42. 42.A week has $480,000 of revenue, 10,000 orders, and 6,760 customers. A slide says average order value rose from $48 to $71. What did the slide change?

  43. 43.Activation is 24% on created a project. Adding viewed the help center would make the rate 41%. Support has not agreed that a help-center view is activation. Product wants 41% in this week's board metric. What gets published as activation?

  44. 44.Age is unknown for 22% of users. Among the known 78%, the 18–24 band is 30%. A slide says 30% of users are 18–24. What does that sentence do to the unknown group?

  45. 45.A campaign started Thursday. Thursday through Sunday spent $40,000 and produced 800 orders, $50 each. The prior full week spent $70,000 for 1,750 orders, $40 each. A note says efficiency got worse. What is being compared?

  46. 46.A funnel has 1,000 sessions, 400 product views, 250 add-to-cart events, and 100 purchases. A summary adds the steps and reports 1,750 engagements, then compares that with 1,000 sessions. What is the 1,750?

  47. 47.A renewal due January 31 was charged by the processor on February 1 and stamped February in one ledger. The contract month is January. About 2,000 boundary charges of $49, roughly $98,000, sit in that gap. How should the shared month treat them?

  48. 48.Two dashboards run the same sales SQL. One refreshed at 6 a.m. The other still shows yesterday's 4 p.m. cache and is missing the evening batch, $130,000. The meeting treats the gap as a definition fight. What is it?

  49. 49.Churned this week includes 600 accounts on day 3 of a 14-day dunning cycle and 300 that already finished dunning. In past months, about 70% of day-3 dunning accounts pay before day 14. Finance recognizes churn at day 14. What is this week's shared churn?

  50. 50.An NPS mail went to 2,000 people. 350 responded: 200 promoters, 50 passives, and 100 detractors. A slide computes (200 − 100) / 2,000 = 5 and calls it the NPS. What did the denominator do?

  51. 51.Product-line revenue adds to $4.32 million. Company revenue is $4.20 million. Bundles worth $120,000 carry two line tags. A lead asks finance to raise the company total so the bars will sum. What is the $120,000?

  52. 52.IP country and billing country disagree on 12% of orders. Tax US revenue, based on billing country, is $1.50 million. Marketing's US revenue, based on IP, is $180,000 higher. Which figure can be the shared US revenue that ties to tax?

  53. 53.A quarter is 91 days. Through day 20, the first 14 days averaged $20,000 and days 15–20 averaged $50,000 after a launch. A note spreads the 20-day blend across the remaining 71 days. What does that spread assume?

  54. 54.The definition doc is 14 months old and mentions no amount filter. Production SQL now keeps only amount > 0, dropping about $15,000 of zero-dollar trial rows a month. The doc and the query disagree. Which one is the shared metric today?

  55. 55.Same-day delivery means ordered by 2 p.m. local and delivered by 9 p.m. local. For 300 cross-timezone orders the dashboard uses the warehouse clock for the cutoff and the customer clock for delivery. Of those, 140 pass one clock and fail the other. What are the 140?

  56. 56.Status = active returns 40,000 subscribers. Another 4,800 have status canceled and a period end still in the future. They are paid through the 30th. The entitlement chart uses status only and shows 40,000. What does a paid-through-today count include?

  57. 57.First-seen devices this month are 70,000. First paid invoices are 12,000. The board line new customers was defined as first payers. The growth review quotes 70,000 in that line. What stays in the board line?

  58. 58.Blended conversion moved from 4.0% to 6.5%. Brand search stayed at 12% and other traffic stayed at 2%. Brand's share of sessions moved from 20% to 45%. What moved the blend?

  59. 59.Mobile accounts are 60% of users and web accounts are 50%, with 10% on both. A pie of platform share is scaled so the slices sum to 100%. What does that scaling do?

  60. 60.January sales were $3.10 million over 31 days, $100,000 a day. February sales were $2.94 million over 28 days, $105,000 a day. A slide says February was down because the month total is lower. What can the shared comparison say?

  61. 61.On settled weeks, refunds that arrive after day 7 and by day 30 take another $20,000 off a week this size. This week's net of the first 7 days is $500,000. The company definition of take-home is the 30-day net. What can be quoted today?

  62. 62.Finance calls 260 accounts enterprise because ARR is at least $100,000. Sales calls 230 accounts enterprise because they have 500 employees or more. The overlap is 190. A shared count of 260 is then described as the sales book. What is wrong?

  63. 63.A purchase at 11:50 p.m. is stamped 12:10 a.m. because the pipeline writes processing time. On a $2 million day, late-evening orders of $70,000 move to the next date. Shared daily sales were defined on purchase time. What happens to the $70,000?

  64. 64.Units shipped rose from 50,000 to 54,000, up 8%. Revenue rose from $1.00 million to $1.03 million, up 3%. Replacements at $0 were 1,000 units last month and 2,600 this month. What did paid units do?

  65. 65.Dashboard A drops rows with is_test = true. Dashboard B only drops emails ending in @company.com and shows 1.2% more GMV, $72,000 on a $6 million month. The extra rows are plus-addressed staff mail and contractor domains. Which filter matches a shared external GMV?

  66. 66.On $10 million of revenue, product cost excluding shipping is $4.5 million and outbound shipping is $1.3 million. Gross margin is 42% if shipping sits in cost of goods and 55% if it sits in operating expense. What is the 13-point gap?

  67. 67.Of 1,000 orders, segment A has 50 orders and 10 refunds. Segment B has 950 orders and 50 refunds. Overall refunds are 60 of 1,000, which is 6%. A review quotes A's 20% and says the book is around 20%. What is the book rate?

  68. 68.The roster has 40 agents, 15 of them on leave with zero tickets. The other 25 closed 550 tickets. A slide says the team averages 13.75 tickets per agent. What does that average put in the denominator?

  69. 69.A trailing 28 days ending Sunday includes a Sunday worth $90,000 that the last four Monday-start weeks exclude, and it excludes a Monday worth $40,000 that those weeks include. The two totals differ by $50,000. What is the gap?

  70. 70.Payments duplicate-charged 700 orders this afternoon, $85,000, and GMV includes them. Finance will post the reversal tomorrow. The shared GMV definition excludes a duplicate once it is identified. What is quoted tonight?

  71. 71.Acquired in Q1 by first order is 8,000 accounts. By signup it is 10,000, of which 2,000 did not order until Q2. Q1 acquisition spend is $400,000. Which denominator does shared CAC use?

  72. 72.The spring-forward Sunday has 23 hours. The hourly chart still draws 24 buckets, and the missing 2 a.m. bucket is stored as zero. That zero is inside the day's average of hourly volume. How should the shared hourly average treat it?

  73. 73.There were 10,000 call attempts. 800 were abandoned in under 5 seconds and then excluded. Of the remaining 9,200, 8,740 were answered, which is 95%. Of all attempts, 8,740 of 10,000 is 87.4%. Which figure is the shared answer rate if the definition is every attempt?

  74. 74.Shopify shows 10,200 orders. The warehouse shows 9,840 shipments. The 360-order gap is paid digital gift cards that never ship. A warehouse lead wants the shipment chart forced to 10,200. What should the shared pair of numbers be?

  75. 75.Each of four weeks has 100,000 weekly active users. Someone adds them to 400,000 and calls that the month's reach. Distinct users across the month are 180,000. What is the 400,000?

  76. 76.The dashboard rounds each line to the cent, then sums the rounded lines. The source sums cents and rounds once. On a $4 million day the two totals differ by $1,200. What is that difference?

  77. 77.First order is flagged by a rank that ties when two orders share a timestamp. For 400 customers both tied orders were kept, adding $30,000 to new-customer revenue. What should the shared first-order rule do?

  78. 78.A family plan has 20,000 paying accounts and 46,000 profiles. Content calls profiles subscribers. Finance calls accounts subscribers. A licensing draft prices the deal on 46,000 subscribers. What has to be named before that price is used?

  79. 79.One hundred jobs ran. Forty failed once and then succeeded, so there were 140 attempts and 40 failed attempts. Eventual job success is 100%. Attempt success is 100 of 140, about 71%. Which rate can carry an unlabeled success label?

  80. 80.On Monday at 9 a.m., chart A is the last 7 complete days and reads $2.10 million, including a full Sunday spike. Chart B is the last 7 times 24 hours and reads $1.85 million, having replaced most of the prior Monday with a quiet Monday morning. What is the $250,000?

  81. 81.Marketing's slide says a qualified lead has a work email and a job title. The CRM rule also requires a booked meeting. Last week 1,800 leads met the slide and 700 met the CRM rule. The board saw 1,800. What should be quoted until one rule is adopted?

  82. 82.Cancelers select 1.4 reasons on average. Price is checked on 30% of cancel forms. A memo says 30% left only because of price, and the reason bars are drawn as a pie that sums to 100%. What did the form actually measure?

  83. 83.A rename from Czech Republic to Czechia missed the region map. 2,400 orders fell into Other, and Other's sales doubled. The source totals for the mapped regions did not change. What doubled?

  84. 84.Three of 13 weeks are in and total $6 million, a $2 million weekly pace. Week 12 is a holiday week that last year did about half a normal week. A note multiplies $6 million by 13/3 and books $26 million. What does 13/3 assume?

  85. 85.The pilot list is 25 named stores. A region filter auto-included a 26th store that opened Friday, and that store is $40,000 of the $1,000,000 now labeled pilot sales. What is the agreed population?

  86. 86.An inner join from orders to customers drops 500 orders with a null customer id, worth $85,000. A left join keeps them. Company sales were defined on orders. Which join produces the shared sales total?

  87. 87.Active users were 200,000. After push-wake began firing the app-open event, the count is 340,000. Product says many of the new fires are a push arriving, not a person looking. The definition text still says opened the app. What is the 340,000?

  88. 88.Four of 100 customers left, so logo churn is 4%. Those four were $90,000 of a $1,000,000 book, so revenue churn is 9%. The board slide says churn is 4%. For a slide about the book, what is missing?

  89. 89.Basic is 70% of logos and 25% of revenue. Pro is 30% of logos and 75% of revenue. A sentence says the typical customer is basic and therefore most of the revenue is basic. What can typical mean here?

  90. 90.A subscription period is 30 days from the start, not a calendar month. A start on January 20 runs through February 18. A calendar chart then shows that subscriber in both months. When is that double counting?

  91. 91.Orders with a fraud score above 0.9 are 2% of GMV, $200,000 of a $10 million week. Finance removes them from GMV. Growth wants them included as demand the customer attempted. How can both facts be reported?

  92. 92.Logo retention is 90%. Net revenue retention is 110% because expansion exceeded lost revenue. A slide says retention improved to 110%. What did that sentence swap?

  93. 93.Same-calendar-day activation is 8% for signups after 9 p.m. and 28% for signups at noon. Activation within 24 hours of signup is 27% and 29% for those two groups. What is the 8% mostly showing?

  94. 94.Email open rate is 20% on 1 million sends. SMS open rate is 40% on 50,000 sends. A recap averages the rates to 30%. What is the send-weighted open rate?

  95. 95.The ad platform counts a conversion on a 7-day click and reports 9,000. The company counts a 1-day click and reports 5,000. A media buyer wants the company window widened so the reports match. What should happen instead?

  96. 96.The eligible-user table rebuilds overnight. A noon promo uses that table and reports reach of 80,000. It misses 3,000 people who became eligible this morning. What is the 80,000?

  97. 97.One chart filters country = 'UK' and shows $0. The other filters country = 'GB' and shows $2.2 million, the whole United Kingdom book. No order is stored as UK. What is the zero?

  98. 98.The reliability review counts severity 1 and 2: 14 incidents. The support weekly counts every severity: 90. The all-hands slide says 14 incidents with no severity note. Teams that handle severity 3 think their week was erased. What should the slide say?

  99. 99.A month filter is written order_date >= March 1 and order_date < March 31, on timestamps. March 31 is about $150,000 of a $4.5 million month. The author meant the calendar month. What did the upper bound do?

  100. 100.Company headcount is 800. Department bars sum to 840, 105% of the company. Forty people sit in two cost centers at 50% each, and both departments count the person as 1. How does the shared rollup count those forty?

  101. 101.Monthly spend is $300,000, of which $80,000 is brand with no acquisition tag. New paying customers are 2,000. Finance CAC on all spend is $150. Growth CAC on the $220,000 performance spend is $110. What are those two rates?

  102. 102.December 1–10 sales are $2.0 million. November was $4.0 million. A forecast treats the first 10 days as 10/31 of December and projects about $6.2 million. Last year the last 10 days of December were half the month. What is weak about 10/31 here?

  103. 103.The sales chart's booked meeting is a calendar hold: 500. Held meetings are 350. No-shows and cancels are 150. The funnel step the company defined is held. What goes in that shared step?

  104. 104.Finance locks April on business day 3. On day 10 the self-serve dashboard is $22,000 under that lock because late refunds kept posting. The board asks which April to quote. Which figure is the board figure?

  105. 105.A marketplace has 50,000 buyers and 8,000 sellers, and 3,000 people are both. A community slide says 58,000 people on the platform. What is the union?

  106. 106.Of 10,000 orders, 8,000 have a first-touch channel. Organic search is 3,200 of those attributed orders. A slide says organic search is 40% of orders. What is 40% actually of?

  107. 107.The weekly mail goes out Sunday night, before Monday's returns batch. Last week the mail said 2,000 returns. Monday's batch added 300. The Monday review quotes the mail as the closed week. What can the review quote?

  108. 108.Three stores score 4.6 on 100 reviews, 4.2 on 5,000 reviews, and 4.8 on 200 reviews. Leadership averages the three scores to 4.53 and calls that the chain. What is the review-weighted average?
