Context engineering
An AI/ML engineer interview on a live context window: the prompt, the retrieved passage, and what got dropped or cached.
These prompts are original practice. They are not questions from a named employer or a live hiring loop.
.A night reviewer opens the payload posted for a torn-coat complaint. The trim log marks never offer store credit as dropped from the front. The posted text starts at the shopper's second message, and the reply still offers credit. What of that ban was this call given?
.The label job's first draft opened with take with food. A med list was placed ahead of it until the limit, and the posted prompt begins at the med list. The food line survives only in the unsent draft. The printed label omits food. Where is that line on this call?
.On a denial build, the cut marker sits above the member notes. Do not cite the 2023 rider is above that marker and is missing from the request body. The letter cites the 2023 rider. What of the ban reached the model?

.Scanner logs show a pick prompt that begins at the third scan. Do not substitute a nearby aisle is in the config the server trimmed off. The ticket sends the picker to aisle 4. What of that order was posted?
.A shopper asks how long a torn coat can be sent back. The only passage pasted in is a shipping FAQ about transit days, the nearest neighbor to that wording. The refund page is not pasted. The reply quotes transit days. What policy text was the model given?
.The fill is NDC 0142. The text pasted into the label prompt is the label of NDC 0143, a near neighbor with a similar name. The 0142 label is not in the paste. The draft copies 0143's dose. Which label could this call read?
.The member's card says Plan B. The denial prompt pastes a Plan A deductible page that ranks beside the question. Plan B's page stays in the index. The letter uses Plan A's dollar figure. Which plan's wording was in the window?
.The assignment is problem 12. The hint prompt pastes the worked solution to problem 13, which shares several phrases. Problem 12's solution is not pasted. The hint walks through problem 13. What solution text was available?
.The scan reads SKU 7781. The bin note pasted into the pick prompt belongs to SKU 7780, a close neighbor. The 7781 note is not pasted. The ticket walks the picker to 7780's bin. What note did the model have?
.The contract line is the deductible is $1,500 per person, not per family. The splitter cut after $1,500, and the pasted chunk stops at the dollar figure. The per-person clause is the next chunk and is not retrieved. What deductible rule was in the window?

.An aisle note says pick lot 42 unless the lot is 88, which is on hold. The pasted chunk ends at lot 42. The hold sentence is the next chunk and is absent from the pick prompt. What hold text was present?
.Refund queries now use a new embedder. The index still stores vectors from the old one, and nobody rebuilds it. A coat-refund search misses the policy chunk and pastes an unrelated greeting. What did this call receive from the policy?
.Interaction vectors were built with embedder A. This morning's label search embeds the question with embedder B and leaves the index alone. The food monograph is missed, and a vitamin note is pasted. What monograph text was in the window?

.A pick prompt includes the path /notes/hold-88.txt and not the text of that file. The ticket treats the lot as clear. What of the file could this call attend to?
.A budgeter uses four characters per token on a pile of support macros. The model's tokenizer is denser on this text. The pile overruns, and the last line, do not promise a callback, is cut. What was that character rule?
.The drug name on a label is a rare string. It splits into many tokens. Staff had reserved one token for it, the extra pieces push avoid alcohol past the limit, and that line is cut. What did the name cost the window?
.A member id is a long integer with no spaces. Staff budget it as one token. It tokenizes into several pieces, the denial prompt overruns, and the exclusion sentence at the end is dropped. What happened to that sentence?
.The same practice problem is posted twice. The second post changes only spaces and a comma, not the word order. That post tokenizes longer, and hint only, no answer no longer fits. What changed in the second window?
.A pick call's limit is 8000 tokens. System text is 500, history is 2000, and 1000 are reserved for the ticket. Staff insert 5500 tokens of bin notes. The builder keeps the reserve and cuts the notes, and the cut portion is the hold. How many note tokens could the window keep?

.A rider index stores 768-dimensional vectors. The denial query is 1024-dimensional. Search returns an error, and the prompt goes out with no rider. What could that index return into the window?
.Lesson vectors are from an old embedder. Staff keep them, switch queries to a new embedder, and multiply the old vectors by a guessed scale. The theorem lesson misses, and a warmup is pasted. What would line the new queries up with the lessons?
.An approximate index returns five bin notes. The exact nearest note, the one with the hold, is not among the five. Only those five are pasted. The ticket misses the hold. What of the exact nearest note was in the window?
.A refund policy never enters the first-stage shortlist. A cross-encoder reranks that shortlist, and the top FAQ is pasted. The reply follows the FAQ. What could the rerank do with the policy?

.Bin notes were embedded last night. This morning the scanner embeds only the scan, searches those vectors, and pastes one note. A reviewer says the stored vector is enough for the model to read the note. What had to be in the window?
.Macro vectors are not normalized. Dot product ranks a long shipping essay above the short refund rule, and only the essay is pasted. Cosine on the same vectors would have ranked the rule higher. What text did this rank put in the window?

.A label needs the monograph that contains the exact code 0142-7781-Q. Vector search pastes a similar drug's note that does not contain that code. The monograph that does contain it is not pasted. What text was the model given?
.Denial search takes the 10 nearest riders with no filter, then drops any that are not eligible. Nine are dropped. The only eligible rider was rank 14, so it is not in the 10 and is not refilled. What eligible text was pasted?
