Dawn hull and fuel
The harbor ferry office plans to replace the cedar hull of the dawn boat with a lighter alloy hull and to keep the same crossing. The office concludes that the boat's fuel use will fall. A lighter hull needs less engine power to hold the speed the timetable already sets.
Rack after the drop
Misprints at the letterpress shop fell sharply in March, and the floor book shows clean sheets all that month. In April the shop bolted a heated drying rack beside the press. The floor lead concludes that the new rack produced the March drop in misprints.
July gauge totals
The weather cooperative's July sheet lists more gauges reporting precipitation than any July in the past decade. Yet the rainfall those gauges recorded, added together, is the lowest July total in that same decade. Clerks checked the arithmetic twice.
Gloves and bronze labels
Smudges on the museum's bronze labels fell the week cotton gloves became required in that gallery. The registrar concludes that the glove rule, rather than a change in gallery humidity, explains the drop. The labels themselves were not replaced.
Squeaks and mouthpieces
Squeaks in the school band fell the week the director switched every reed player to a new reed brand. The director concludes that the new brand caused the drop. The band still plays the same march in the same cold room. The squeak tally is the director's rehearsal sheet.
Barge before the horn
The river lock keeper claims the grain barge will be downstream of the chamber before the mill horn at three. The barge is due to enter at 2:46, and a barge of that length takes at most twelve minutes to enter, rise, and leave when it is not held outside the gate.
Three jacket returns
The tailor altered three jackets for one Tuesday client, using a new hem stitch on each, and none of the three came back. She concludes that the new stitch almost never leads to a return. The rest of the week's hems used the old stitch.
Dawn frost warning
If the weather cooperative files the frost warning by ten, the warning arrives at the radio station before midnight. The cooperative will file the warning by ten. Therefore the station will air the frost warning at dawn.
Warm nights and fruit
The greenhouse card for this tomato variety says the plants set fruit only if night temperatures stay above 55 degrees. In the greenhouse, every night last week stayed above 55. The grower concludes that the plants set fruit last week. The thermometer hangs at plant height.
March petition stack
The courthouse filing desk received more petitions this March than last March. Even so, the stack still waiting at closing was smaller every evening this March than on the matching evenings last March. The count includes every petition the desk accepted into the queue.
Morning rye shift
The bakery cooperative should move the rye loaves to the morning shift. The evening oven has been running too hot for rye, the morning shift already has an open rack, and a hot oven cracks the crust of rye. The cooperative posts the shift list on the bakery door.
Hill brake shoes
After the transit yard fitted the hill buses with a new brake shoe, brake alarms on the hill route fell. The yard chief concludes that the new shoe caused the drop. The hill timetable and the passenger loads stayed as they were.
Torn map returns
The map archive lent more maps this year than last year. Yet fewer of the returned maps came back with torn edges. The archive counts a tear only when a reader brings the map back to the desk, and the same clerks have done that count both years.
Thursday book printing
The clinic appointment book was printed at a local shop last spring. The Thursday two o'clock line has been empty for six weeks, and an empty line can take a walk-in vaccination without moving other patients. Therefore the clinic should book walk-in vaccinations in that Thursday line.
Light voices
The choir director promises that the closing piece will not tire the hall, because the piece is light and light music does not tire listeners. She points out that the closing piece is scored for light voices. From that scoring she treats the promise as kept.
Paperless claim packets
Applicants who received the insurance desk's paperless packet last month abandoned claims at a lower rate than applicants who received the paper packet. The desk concludes that offering the paperless packet will cut abandoned claims.
Night tram release
The night tram leaves on time whenever it is released to the platform by 9:50. Inspection of tonight's tram will end by 9:40. The barn chief concludes that tonight's tram will leave on time. The chief wrote the note on the barn chalkboard.
Three short acts
The theater box office posts running times on the lobby board before the doors open. Each of the three acts of tonight's play runs under forty minutes. The manager concludes from those act times that the play as a whole runs under forty minutes.
Bean packets below sixty
The seed library argues that the bean packets in this lot will stay viable for borrowers. Packets of this lot stay viable if they were kept both dry and below 60 degrees. These packets were kept dry. The lot number is stamped on the envelope.
Oil and shift cables
Bicycles oiled with the workshop's new chain oil skipped gears less often than bicycles oiled with the old oil. The workshop concludes that the new oil caused the drop in skipped gears. Both groups rode the same week on the same hill loop.
Unblistered glaze
The pottery shop writes every firing in a book kept on the kiln shelf. The lead potter reasons as follows. If this bowl had been overfired, its glaze would have blistered. The glaze shows no blisters. Therefore this bowl was not overfired.
Lamp and hail distance
Ships hailed the lighthouse from farther off during the week the keeper swapped in a new lamp. The keeper concludes that the new lamp, not clearer air, explains the longer hail distance. The hail log is kept in the tower desk.
Monday lentil stew
The community kitchen posts its pot list on the board by the door. Every stew served on Monday used the lentils from bin A. No stew that used bin A contained dairy. The kitchen served stew on Monday, and that pot is the one at the top of the board.
Porch by six
The route, when the roads are clear, takes the newspaper truck at most two hours. The truck will leave the dock by four with the Tuesday edition. The editor concludes that the Tuesday edition will be on the porch by six.
Trout below the weir
The hatchery released more young trout this spring than last spring. Anglers on the same creek caught fewer trout this summer than last summer. The hatchery's release book and the anglers' landing book cover the same stretch of weeks.
Waxed linen thread
The bindery will sew its pamphlets with linen thread. Linen thread keeps a pamphlet's signatures from loosening when that thread is waxed. The shop concludes that the pamphlets' signatures will not loosen. The sewing frame sits by the north window.
Mainspring and a sale
If the mainspring is replaced, the clock will keep time. The clock will be sold this week only if it keeps time. The mainspring will be replaced. Therefore the clock will be sold this week. The clock is a mantel clock on the repair shelf.
East hive hollow
The east hive should be moved off the low ground. Damp ground weakens a colony, and the east hive sits in a hollow that holds water after rain. A weak colony gathers less honey. The beekeeper keeps the hive notes in a tin by the gate.
New spindles
Wool mills that run the new spindle report fewer broken yarns than mills that keep the old spindle. This mill concludes that putting in the new spindle will cause fewer broken yarns on its own floor. The comparison covers a full season of the same wool.
Fine for a torn plate
The reading room fines a borrower for a torn plate only when that borrower caused the tear. This plate tore because old thread failed before the loan, and the borrower never handled the failed thread. So the room should not fine this borrower.
Lamp or damp air
The paper label in the display case faded. Either the case lamp or damp air faded it. The case is sealed, and the sheet inside is dry. Therefore the lamp faded the label. The registrar wrote that finding on the condition card.
Stone deck and flour
Loaves came out taller the week the bakery cooperative installed a stone deck in place of steel. The head baker concludes that the stone deck, not the new flour, produced the taller loaves. Regulars noticed the change on the Saturday bake.
Hill waits grow
The transit yard added buses to the hill route at rush hour. Even so, the average wait on that route at rush hour grew. The yard counted waits at the same three stops it used the month before, and the fare did not change.
Gauge and the kayaks
If the upstream gauge reads above twelve, the river lock closes to pleasure boats. The gauge reads above twelve this afternoon. Therefore the kayak club will not launch this afternoon. The gauge hut sits just above the lock gate.
Stamp pad and fine lines
On the letterpress, too much ink on a form fills the closed counters of small letters. A stamp pad works the same way: too much ink fills fine lines. So a heavily inked stamp pad will fill the fine lines of this cut. The cut is locked in the chase.
Log the gauge early
Volunteers should log each gauge before noon. After all, the forecast desk can use only logs filed before noon, and the afternoon bulletin is built from those logs. A log that arrives later misses the bulletin the desk is building.
Clips and label losses
Losses of paper labels fell by half in the month the museum registrar replaced thumbtacks with clips. The registrar argues that the switch to clips caused that drop. The labels hang in one gallery, and the tally is the gallery's own loss book.
Flannel and collar stains
Coats the tailor lined with the new flannel came back without collar stains, while the shop's other coats often return stained. The tailor concludes that lining coats with the new flannel will stop collar stains. Both groups were winter coats.
Skipped pledge drive
The radio host argues that a listener's call to drop the midnight poetry slot should be ignored. That listener once skipped a pledge drive. Therefore, the host says, the listener's view about the slot is worthless and need not be answered.
Cover sheets accepted
The courthouse filing desk began rejecting any petition that lacks the new cover sheet. In the weeks after that rule, the number of petitions the desk accepted went up. Clerks apply the rule to every petition that reaches the window.
Retire car 12
Floor lead: Car 12 should be retired from the evening roster. It failed the brake test twice, and a car that fails twice should leave that roster. I checked the card myself before the shift horn.
Night mechanic: Car 12 should not be retired from the evening roster. It did fail the brake test twice, but the test rail was oily, and the brakes on the car are sound.
Four maps, one drawer
The map archivist examined four maps from the north drawer and found no mold on any of them. She concludes that the archive's maps are free of mold. The north drawer holds only maps of the river towns, and the other drawers were not opened.
Surgery block rule
The clinic's booking rule says that any booking overlapping a surgery block must be moved. This vaccination is booked inside Tuesday's surgery block. Therefore this vaccination must be moved. The rule is printed on the first page of the appointment book.
Holding seat J4
No seat in row J is held for a season subscriber. Every aisle seat in the balcony is in row J. The box office is holding seat J4, and J4 is an aisle seat in the balcony. The hold is marked in the evening book at the window.
Creaking risers
The choir director reasons from the hall log. If the choir stood for the last chorus, the risers would have creaked. The risers creaked tonight. So the choir stood for the last chorus. The log notes creaks in the margin.
Whitewash and the fan
Wilted seedlings in the greenhouse fell after the glass was whitewashed. The grower concludes that the whitewash, not the new fan, cut the wilt. The seedlings are the same variety as the week before, and the pots were not moved.
Room on the morning rack
The morning oven already has room for the rye trays. Rye crusts crack when an oven runs as hot as the evening oven has run all month. The cooperative should bake the rye trays in the morning. The shift card is clipped above the oven.
Bus 19 and the hill
Every bus that failed inspection this week has a cracked leaf spring. No bus with a cracked leaf spring is assigned to the hill. Bus 19 failed inspection this week. The yard list is posted beside the fuel pump, and the chief initialed it.
Oak cabinet corners
All of the hand-colored maps are in the oak cabinet. Some maps in the oak cabinet are missing a corner. Nothing missing a corner may be lent. The oak cabinet stands against the wall of the map archive's reading room, and lending slips stay in the desk.
Gauge report required
The insurance desk pays a weather claim only when a gauge report is attached. This claim includes a narrative and no gauge report. Therefore the desk should not pay this claim. The rule is posted on the counter card that faces the filer.
Car 4 off the hill
Car 4 should stay off the evening run. Its brake shoes are below the safety mark, and a car with shoes below that mark cannot stop the evening hill. The evening run includes that hill. The barn chief circled car 4 on the run sheet.
Cards hung to dry
The letterpress shop concludes that this batch of cards will dry flat. Laid paper dries flat if it is hung from the top edge. These cards were printed on laid paper. The batch is the wedding order due on Friday, and the slip is clipped to the tympan.
Anthem or past noon
The hall director reasons as follows. Either the choir will sing the short anthem or the service will run past noon. The choir will not sing the short anthem. So the service will run past noon. The choice is marked on the order of service.
Crooked hem
The tailor should not charge for this hem. The shop promised that the hem would hang even, and this hem hangs crooked. The promise is written on the order slip pinned to the cloth. The customer is waiting at the counter.
Shelters and broken gauges
Broken gauges at the weather cooperative became less common after shelters were built over the outdoor gauges. The cooperative concludes that the shelters caused the decline. The shelters went up at the start of the storm season the log is now reviewing.
North wall humidity
The registrar concludes that the watercolor will not cockle on the north wall. The registrar's condition sheet says a watercolor cockles only if humidity on its wall swings by more than ten points in a day. The north wall's humidity is on a control system. The sheet is hinged at the top edge only.
Jo and the new chart
Everyone in the school band's percussion section reads the new chart. No one who missed Monday's rehearsal reads the new chart. Jo plays snare in the percussion section. The chart is the march on the afternoon stand, and Jo is listed on the section roster.
Blue book lot numbers
A blue-book entry records a vaccination the clinic gave only when that entry includes a lot number. Some entries in the blue book have no lot number. The clerks are checking the noon page, and that book is the only place those entries are kept.
Tray 6 goes outside
Every tray that was moved outside this week was a pepper tray. No pepper tray was watered from the cold tank. Tray 6 was moved outside this week. The move is noted on the greenhouse slate by the door, which lists trays by number.
Poetry slot callers
Few people call during the midnight poetry slot. Callers are a poor gauge of night listeners, who often write instead. Therefore the low call count does not show that the slot lacks listeners. The station should keep the midnight poetry slot.
The Heron at noon
No boat that left after sunrise made the noon dock. Every mail boat made the noon dock. The Heron is a mail boat. The harbor ferry office lists the mail boats on the dawn slate beside the window, and the Heron is named there.
Balcony price week
Balcony sales rose the week the theater box office lowered the balcony price. The manager concludes that the lower price caused the rise. The stalls price and the play on the marquee stayed the same as the week before. The new balcony price is on the window card.
Turned away at two
The filing desk should accept this late petition. The filer presented it at two, during posted hours, and the desk turned the filer away. That turn-away is the only reason the petition is late. The hours are painted on the window.
Oiled cable
A gear on this bicycle shifts only if its cable is oiled. The mechanic at the workshop oiled the cable this morning. She concludes that the gear will shift on this afternoon's ride. The bicycle is the red one in the stand.
Tenors and the pitch pipe
The choir director concludes that the final chord will be in tune. The final chord is in tune if the tenors match the pitch pipe. She has asked the tenors to match the pitch pipe before the chord. The pipe hangs on the stand.
Bowl 12 sold
Every bowl that cracked in the kiln was glazed with the ash mix. No bowl glazed with the ash mix was sold at the pottery shop. The shop sold bowl 12. The sale is written in the afternoon book beside the shelf number and the price.
Checklist and loose papers
Claims filed with the insurance desk's new checklist had fewer missing attachments than claims filed without it. The desk concludes that using the checklist caused that reduction. Both sets of claims were filed in the same month.
Grain barge at dawn
If a barge draws more than eight feet, it waits for the high pool at the river lock. No barge waiting at dawn draws more than eight feet. The grain barge is waiting at dawn. The keeper marked it on the dawn slate that hangs in the lock house.
Two routes dropped
Missed porch deliveries fell the week the newspaper moved the press start from midnight to ten. The editor concludes that the earlier start caused the drop. Carriers kept the same handcarts and the same deadline at the porch.
Thin shoes on car 7
The hill run is steep after the maple stop. Cars with thin shoes cannot hold on that grade. Car 7 has thin shoes. Therefore car 7 should be kept off the hill run tonight. The note is on the barn's run sheet, written before dusk.
Saturday rye survey
At the bakery cooperative's Saturday rye sale, staff asked people on the way out whether the town should bake more rye, and most said yes. The cooperative concludes that most residents of the town want more rye on the weekly bake.
Vent the roof at noon
Bench lead: We should vent the greenhouse roof at noon. The leaf temperature is already high, and venting will bring it down before the plants scorch. I read the leaf gauge twice.
Assistant: We should not vent the roof at noon. The leaf temperature is already high, but these plants need that heat today, and a noon vent would chill them.
Sketch for the loan show
Registrar: The sketch should travel to the loan show. It is stable, and stable works on paper may travel. I looked at the sheet this morning.
Curator: The sketch should not travel to the loan show. It is stable, but that show's gallery swings in humidity, and this sheet was never hinged for a trip.
Pennants and wakes
Boats that fly the harbor's new pennant draw fewer wake complaints than boats that fly none. The ferry office concludes that flying the pennant causes pilots to leave smaller wakes. The complaint book covers the same channel for both groups.
Reminder calls
No-shows fell on the weekend the theater box office began telephoning reminders. The manager concludes that the calls, rather than the sunny weather, explain the drop. The play and the curtain time matched the weekend before.
Pete's morning log
Every volunteer who logged a gauge for the weather cooperative this morning lives in Mill County. No one who lives in Mill County missed the training. Pete logged a gauge this morning. His name is on the morning sheet clipped to the board.
Front rack hems
All of the tailor's rush hems are on the front rack. Some hems on the front rack have not been pressed. A hem is ready for a customer call only when it has been pressed. The rack stands just inside the shop door, and rush tags hang on the hooks.
Living composers
The radio station promised listeners a live broadcast of the evening concert. The host says the promise is already met because the program is devoted to living composers. She concludes that the station has kept its promise.
The 1910 river sheet
No map stored in the cellar of the map archive is packed in the traveling crate. Every river survey is stored in the cellar. The 1910 sheet is a river survey. The crate sits by the reading-room door, and Friday's loan list is tied to it.
Ana at two o'clock
Every patient on the clinic's Thursday two o'clock list was referred by the school nurse. No patient referred by the school nurse is scheduled for a blood draw. Ana is on Thursday's two o'clock list. Her line is the third name.
Soft packing week
Bruised type became less common the week the letterpress shop switched the press to softer packing. The shop concludes that the softer packing caused the drop. The same press hand ran the jobs that week and the week before.
Bus 8 spare battery
The transit chief concludes that bus 8 will be ready for the hill at dawn. Its brake job will be finished by midnight. Any bus whose brake job is finished by midnight is ready at dawn if the yard has a charged spare battery for it. The job card is on the bench.
Feed after yellowing
Seedlings in the east bench of the greenhouse yellowed through April. In May the grower began a new feed. The grower concludes that the new feed caused the April yellowing. The April notes were already in the bench book before May.
Warm-up and flat notes
Flat notes in the choir fell after the director added a new warm-up. The director concludes that the warm-up, rather than a smaller repertoire, produced the drop. The same singers stood on the same risers as the week before.
Adjuster in the office
The insurance desk concludes that this storm claim will be paid by Friday. The claim includes the gauge report. Any storm claim that includes the gauge report is paid by Friday if the adjuster is in the office. The report is clipped to the file.
Gate open by 2:30
The grain barge will reach the mill before the horn if it clears the river lock chamber by 2:50. The upstream gate will open by 2:30. Therefore the barge will reach the mill before the horn. The horn is the mill's afternoon signal.
Cold mark in the log
The kiln log calls this firing cold. In the pottery shop, cold means the witness cones did not bend. It does not mean the pots feel cool out of the kiln. The cones on this shelf bent fully. So the log's cold mark does not apply to this firing.
Monday pot without dairy
The Monday stew should be made without dairy. Three regulars at the community kitchen cannot have dairy, and the Monday pot is shared by everyone who comes. A shared pot that contains dairy leaves those regulars with nothing. The pot list is on the door.
Ten trout in one pool
The hatchery netted ten trout from the upper pool and found each of them healthy. From that check it concludes that the trout in the creek are in good health. The upper pool is one bend, and the lower pools were not netted.
Car 7 by 9:40
If car 7 is released to the platform by 9:50, it will make the hill run. Car 7 will be inspected by 9:40. Therefore car 7 will make the hill run tonight. The barn clock above the pit nearest the doors is the one the chief uses.
Stone loaves and steel
Loaves baked on the bakery cooperative's new stone deck were taller than last month's loaves baked on steel. The cooperative argues that the stone deck caused the greater height. Both bakes used the Saturday shift and the same baker.
River sketch and its mat
Every sketch in the museum's loan crate was hinged last year. No sketch hinged last year still has its old mat. The river sketch is in the loan crate. The crate is tagged for the Friday shipment, and the tag is on the handle.
Sections in tune
At rehearsal, each section of the school band played its own piece in tune. The director concludes that the full-band number, with every section playing at once, was in tune. The full number uses all four sections together.
Fender at the slip
Scraped pilings at the ferry slip became less common after the office hung a new fender. The office concludes that the fender, rather than slower approaches, explains the drop. The count comes from the same piling log as the month before.
Vaccination lines and waits
The clinic opened more vaccination lines this month than last month. Even so, the average wait for a vaccination grew. Waits were timed at the same desk with the desk clock, and each line uses the same appointment book as before.
Three petitions this year
The filing clerk argues that a filer's proposal to keep the desk open through noon need not be considered. That filer has already submitted three petitions this year. Therefore, the clerk says, the proposal about the hours can be set aside.
Barn radio at dawn
The radio producer concludes that the dawn frost warning will reach the farm crew. The warning will be read at dawn. The farm crew hears a dawn warning if the barn radio is switched on. The producer wrote the plan on the dawn card.
Pins still in the cloth
The cuff on this coat hangs crooked. That happens either because the hem was pinned unevenly or because the cloth slipped in the press. The pins were even, and they are still in the cloth. So the cloth slipped in the press. The tailor checked the pins twice.
Brittle maps withdrawn
Torn corners became less common the month the map archive required cotton gloves in the reading room. The archivist concludes that the glove rule caused the drop. Readers used the same tables they had used the month before.
Signed log, boat leaves
The ferry office applies this rule. A boat may leave the slip only if the log is signed. The log for this boat is signed. So this boat may leave. The rule is posted above the office window, and the logbook stays on the desk.
Shade cloth and lettuce
Lettuce that had been wilting held through the week the greenhouse grower hung shade cloth. The grower concludes that the cloth, rather than cooler nights, saved the lettuce. The lettuce is the same planting as the week before.
Clear route tonight
If the newspaper truck leaves the dock by four, the Tuesday edition is on the porch by six. The route is clear tonight. Therefore the Tuesday edition will be on the porch by six. The editor posted that aim on the dock board.
Matinee and the school group
The box office manager concludes that the matinee will sell out. The school group is coming. The matinee sells out whenever that group comes if the stalls are not already held for subscribers. The group reserved this morning.
Spilled seed packet
The seed library should not replace this packet. It replaces a packet only when the packet was empty on arrival. This packet arrived full, and the borrower spilled it after taking it home. The rule is printed on the lending card.
Bus 15 failed at dawn
Every bus the transit yard washed last night is in bay 2. No bus in bay 2 failed the dawn brake check. Bus 15 failed the dawn brake check. The check sheet hangs on the bay door, and the night crew signed the wash list before leaving.
Neighbor without shelters
Broken gauges became less common after the weather cooperative built shelters over them. The cooperative concludes that the shelters, rather than a calmer season, explain the drop. The gauges are the same set as the year before.
Hinges on the traveling sketches
Sketches from the museum portfolio arrived uncockled on a trip after the registrar hinged them. The registrar concludes that the hinges, rather than lower humidity in the truck, explain the sound arrival. The trip used the usual crate.
Front loaf on the rack
Every loaf on the bakery cooperative's morning rack was mixed with the rye starter. No loaf mixed with the rye starter contains dairy. The front loaf is on the morning rack. The rack is the one beside the counter, and the front loaf faces the door.
